Cracked Windshield

A pebble literally the size of a grain of sand cracked my windshield. It hit at the very top of my windshield about a half a inch from the top, and within 24 hours my windshield cracked about 3 inches. I heard it hit on the freeway but never saw it because its the glass part above the black trim around the windshield. Sucksss.

Smaller than a dollar bill? Have it repaired before it spreads.

 

I have had that happen twice with very small rocks. The service guy at American Auto Glass said that it is due to the angle of our windshields?

 

I have spent most of my working life (30 years) commuting on one highway or another. 35,000 miles a year for most of that time. I have had rocks hit my windshield on a regular basis. Some sound like a shotgun going off. I have only had to have one replaced, some I had fixed and they never spread. Most just left a chip/dent and did not crack it.

With that said I didn't have my 2009 2 months before a rock hit the windshield and left a half inch crack. The rock was very small and barley made a sound when it hit. I either got very unlucky or they used cheaper glass in the trucks. I don't think they are using the caliper of glass that they used to. I was shocked at how easily it cracked.

All my toyota truck windshields have cracked at one time or another starting with my 1st one in 1987. Then in 90, then in 95 3x, then in a Tundra & lastly my 06 Tacoma. None of my other vehicles have had this track record. Just the way it is....sorry to hear & find a reputable repair shop who knows what they are doing.

 

I am on my 2nd windsheild and that has a crack at the bottom just above the wiper. This time it was small enough to repair but who knows for how long that will last!!

 

I commute highways all the time. min 120 miles a day...I would put in 3 windshields a year before I got the little bug protector! Yes, really that little change in the wind pattern has saved alot of windshields. It is my opinion that windshields are made terribly terribly thin now-a-days compared to maybe even just 15 years ago. Probably to save weight and money or whatever. So they crack very easy. The bug shield actually helps get those little rocks diverted as well as the bugs in my opinion and all I can say is since using them on my last two trucks I've had many less broken windshields (just one so far, probably jinxing myself now...LOL!)...

Insurance should replace it no problem. Most come with no-deductible glass coverage.

 

My insurance allows one windshield replacement a year. If it needs it I usually wait till April, no point in replacing a windshield in the middle of winter and possibly having it crack again.

 

I was going to say, insurance should cover that. I understand it may be a good idea to wait for the warm snap to repair but i dunno....good luck

 

My glass deductible is 250, so it wasn't worth filing a claim. I just got mine replaced out of pocket with PPG glass for 175+tax. It was a small chip for 2 years before it turned into a large crack and that is when i got it replaced. I looked around and did a lot of research on windshields and everyone recommended either PPG (now PGW) or Pilkington (which makes United, the OEM glass for our truck).

 

I got a crack as well but the dealer replaced it under some TSB. I guess I lucked out.........

 

Windshields do not have anything to do with make or model. Maybe the aerodynamics of some contribute one way or another, but overall they are going to get hit and some are going to not fair well.

My '09 has been tagged twice and doing fine. My '93 chevy got chipped, etc... all the time. Some spread to cracks. I once had a new windshield put in and within two weeks had chips. I was pissed.
