You'll want to take to a differential shop

Good chance 4WP would outsource the job to a specialist shop and just collect a percentage rake on it... subcontract work.

The 18s are better for Mall Crawling.
Bigger wheels garner more bro points and the smaller sidewalls attract more hoes.

Really, the shorter side wall is better for towing and stability by being more ridged.

If not Christo aka Mr. Slee, try RSG and check the Colorado Regional site for other sources - at least one wrencher there who knows how do them. PM me where you go - I will be doing the same after warranty expires.

Does switching to taller gear ratio's INCREASE your vehicles payload capacity? Or say increase your GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating). Looking at numbers on the 2016 tacoma TRD OR DC Long Bed, its payload capacity STOCK is 1120, or 5600 GVWR. Curb weight being 4480 stock.

With all the accessories we enjoy as tacoma owners... going over this number seems quite easy when you have a double cab and throw 3 people in it, on top of all the fixed equipment.

Nope, you are limited to as it is setup from the factory regardless what you do.

Yes under factory setup, but with taller gears and upgraded suspension, shouldnt this give you more payload capacity? Lower gears will strain Powerplant less?

A majority of payload limits are based around the braking capabilities of the vehicle.

And changing the suspension can potentially decrease your payload limit.

But that would include towing as well on the brakes though, since the tacomas total weight with towing number is 11000 or so lbs.

So it doesnt seem that brakes would be limiting factor on Payload since you could have a 2-3K lb trailer on the back and still be within limits

In theory yes. But there is no actual way of increasing the stated payload of a vehicle. You'd have to have you vehicle retested and meet whatever the standards are for the increased payload, but I've never heard of anyone every actually trying to do this.

If you are actually worried about this I'm afraid you bought the wrong truck if you are wanting to carry a bunch of weight.

oh, so this is more of a legal question. Like you are not allowed to exceed the weight based on laws?

I was talking from a more practical perspective. Like does switching to taller gears actually help the truck carry more?

Tons of builds on this form of overland style builds, steel bumpers winches ect. Just saying I am adding up the numbers with aluminum components and you can start exeeding the limits quite easily when you start adding passengers in the truck.

I would imagine there are a bunch of overweight vehicles on this form from a legal perspective then...

    Yes it's a law thing.

Taller gears will make the engine not have to work as hard to get up to speed. But does nothing to help you when you have to stop.

You are probably quite correct. There are a lot of overweight vehicles on the road.

Ok so when we come to a stopping thing, I would imagine the tacoma is fine because the GCVR (gross combined vehicle rating) is 11000 or so lbs.

That is weight rating of the total truck GVWR, and the Trailer in tow. So with the tow package tacoma, this should give you plenty of stopping power for even going over your GVWR by a few hundred pounds....

    now from a legal perspective...

Looking for shop recommendations for the regear of my 2016 Tacoma Sport. Want the 4.88 and most likely ARB lockers front and back.
    Portland Oregon or nearby. Thanks!

I believe the word you are looking for is "Deeper"; "Taller" refers to gearing that is numerically smaller, for example a 3.73 is taller than a 4.10, but a 4.30 is deeper than both.

Edit to add, the limiting factor for payload in the Tacoma is most likely a combination of the rear springs, composite bed, and frame.

    Yes, sorry meant deeper gears.

So lets say we have a tacoma with upgraded leaf springs, and front suspension. weight is distributed on the frame instead of all in the bed.

No need to apologize. From a legal stand point the limit is what the manufacturer states on the door jam tag, if you want to change that you would have to contact your state agency to ask if that is even allowed to be altered or increased over the manufacturer stated limit.

In a hypothetical world where I accept no blame for your actions and there could never be a bus full of nuns to be killed or hurt if you lost control of your vehicle, the frame as engineered would be the limiting factor. Remember Toyota has never been know for good quality frames and many of us have witnessed FJs, Toyota Pickups, and even First Gen Tacomas ripping sections of their frames off during a recovery.
