How to install a Old Man Emu Lift on Tacoma Video

How does this lift compare to other ones such as the toytec boss? which is about the same price except it has adjustable coil overs

 

I will definitely be doing this in the future.

 

I believe the toytec boss is repackaged, nicer version of the 5100 bilstein shock hence the adjustable perches. I've heard good and bad things about the OME kit. Some people swear by it, others say they get a lot of clunking noises up front.

My initial choice was the OME kit, but wound up spending some more coin to get the Icon stage 1 kit since they're rebuildable.

 

How're you liking the icon kit?? It isn't that much more expensive either

 

I love it. It's a big change going from the stock OR suspension since its a digressive vs progressive shock. It's a lot firmer at slower speeds almost like the TRD Sport. It handles MUCH better onroad...hardly any body roll or dive. Also, it eats up big bumps like nothing. It doesn't have that "plush" cadillac feel as the original OR suspension or any other progressive shocks but this is better if you do slow technical trails and want better on-road performance. I do tight technical trails out in the NW and didn't need remote reservoirs but wanted a little step up from OMEs after reading up on suspension. I also added their progressive AAL.

The OMEs, Fox, Kings, etc are better for a softer on-road ride, and better dampening on fast trails out in the desert.

Glad I found this last minute before installing my Bilstein 6112's the other day. I seen vids and how-to's for the 2nd gen which would've worked, but I thought this was the easiest way. Steps are pretty much the same as the vids showing how to replace the struts without a spring compressor, but I originally didn't want to loosen the alignment cam nuts. I marked the cams and they didn't even move out place so that made it easier.

 

'bout ready to install my Icons on the Pro. I guess is the same procedure.

 

Similar, but you don't need to disconnect the LCA or remove the tie rod as per instructions.

 

Disconnecting the sway bar mounts and lower ball joint bolts make the coil-over slide in like butter. I also find a 2x4x3 also comes in handy for prying that lower arm for just the 1/16 of an inch to start the bolts.

 

This will be perfect when I get back in a few months for my Dakar install... you guys just got my business! I'll contact you guys when It gets closer to my deployment ending and ill be ordering up some parts!

 

Forgot to ask this in my other post.

Somebody on here posted the 2nd gen torque specs from Techstream or service manual and all the specs in the video were the same except for the alignment cam. In the vid, torque says 135 ft lbs, but the 2nd gen spec states 135 Nm or 100 ft lbs. Did it change for the 3rd gen?

@Low Range Off-Road - I have some questions regarding the Dakars in the rear- will the OME u-bolts (black ones as seen) still be long enough if the

$82 D29XL Leaf Spring

D29XL AAL is installed into the leaf pack? Further to that, some recommend shims under the leafs, I'm assuming this was not done because there were no vibrations?

Only with trimming. Lift alone will not fit tires.
