I was looking around the engine bay today and noticed oil around the oil filter (a noticeable amount). I went ahead and checked the oil level with the dipstick and it indicated above the second divot. What are your guys thoughts on this? How much of a problem is this? How much is too much oil? Thanks in advance

What's between the filter and the motor??? Something to do with the tow package and engine oil cooler??? (my tacoma does not have the tow package) I would repair it. Probably an o-ring or something minor. It does not sound like you're down on oil though.

Looks like nobody wiped out the the catch basin after an oil change. When the filter is pulled off, the oil drains into that silver looking thing. On the bottom is a hole that a cup, piece of tubing etc can be used to catch the oil. there is a black cap on it by default from the dealer. Perhaps that last person to change your oil never removed that cap and just left the oil in there. A rag and a degreaser will clean that up nice. Do that, and see if more oil forms. If it does, then obivously it is a problem.

You're saying that your oil level is ABOVE the high mark on your dip stick, and oil appears to be seeping out around the filter? I don't know much, but I've seen/heard that too much oil is as big a problem as not enough. How much oil did you put in at your last change?

I can't offer a solution other than to do an oil change and put in only as much oil as it needs.

Thanks for the insight fellas. I'm not sure how much oil was put in. I went to a good year store to get my oil changed. I am due for another oil changed. Just out of curiosity any know the max amount of quarts it can hold?

    5.5qts

I change my own... It's a great amount b/c I can buy a box of 6 qts, throw out 5 bottles, and have half a bottle to put behind the back seats just in case.
