This question may be stupid as I've been driving sticks for years, I'm on a hill at a red light and take my foot off the brake and the truck starts rolling backward while in drive-WTF- is it that the torque converter won't grab at 600 rpm? or do I have a problem?

Is your transmission fluid full ? Considering you are on a hill , you may want to be sure its full
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...be-low-on-fluid-directly-from-factory.405642/

If you want to check the stall stage of your converter , first you must be sure your fluid level is topped off properly .
Once a manual fluid level check has been performed and your fluid level is adjusted properly , move your truck to a flat road , put the truck into gear and slowly hit the gas pedal .
The stall stage of your converter is the rpm of the engine before your driving wheels begin turning
If your fluid level is fine ,there may be nothing wrong as mentioned by Bill and the weight of the truck is working against the stall stage of the torque converter
    A better explanation here

Do you have a TRD off-road? If so, they purposely do it like that, I assume so you can purposefully roll back off of something on a trail.

The anti gravity mechanism is either broke or it's low in AG fluid. Take it back to the dealer and demand an upgrade or a free refill on AG fluid.

Normal, mine rolls back as well and all kinds of lights flash and make noises. Its so you can roll off obstacles.

I think it depends on the grade of the hill, at one point or another all my vehicles roll back slightly. My truck and my wifes subaru both roll back on the exit ramp of my work parking garage

30-40% Grade would be my guess on some of the instances. Heck even coming out of an underground garage in San Diego where the grade is like 55% it didn't rock back.

Now, can you describe the hill? If you head up a 90 degree incline you might experience a bit of "roll back" when stopping.

    Please post video.

Mine does it if i hit my driveway curb too slow. Also, when I drive up on my ramps in reverse the truck rolls forward unless I give it constant gas.

I thought I read in the Tacoma Brochure that the Automatics have Hill Holder and Down Hill Assist.

How much time between brake release and rolling backwards?

I'm really not sure what to make of the responses here other than @Taco Addiction should be banned for his response.

Seriously, ATs have a fluid driven coupling and unless the TC is locked (which generally only happens when cruising, it'll roll backward in drive. Not unusual at all. Some vehicles just happen to be light enough and pump enough fluid through the torque converter that it may not, but what the OP is experiencing isn't really abnormal as far as automatic transmissions go.

Does the taco have some special feature that prevents this? Dunno. Maybe. Doubt it though.
