A few more. You don't get to see these birds flying anymore. It's a shame.

I'm trying to place name to face but my memory has faded since it was so long ago... I think the FacChief was SFC Adams and there was a girl named Holloway that worked there... but that's about all I recall

    :woot:

It's a damn shame they retired the fleet... was by far my favorite heli and the 58 pilots always had the best personalities... :D

My grandfather retired from the USAF in 1967 with over 25,000 hours.

    That's impossible now.

...^^^... 25,000 hours ... ... (congrats to him :)) ... that would cost more than most countries are worth today.

Old MATS pilot. Got called back to active duty for the Berlin Airlift, stayed for 20. Flew C-47s, C-54s, and was the most proficient C-124 pilot in the USAF. He did all the acceptance flights on that bird, and led the way into heavy airlift to Greenland.

Successfully landed a crashing bird in Newfoundland in 1966 (multi-engine and hydraulic failure); tore him up but because he'd sent the rest of the crew to the back of the bird they were okay. Old Shakey took it on the nose and crumpled up to the cockpit, but didn't blow up. He never flew again after that.

Used to get drunk and tell me hilarious stories about being a hop pilot from Newfoundland to Ireland early in WW2, and how he had a girlfriend at each end. He'd then bitch about "those damn wimmen" WAF pilots who replaced him on that route so he could fly combat airlift. Besides all the cargo he delivered in theater, he helped deliver the 82nd on D-Day.

Cool dude, just the nicest guy, and still a personal hero.

Must have been flying something big that holds a lot of gas. Most fighter guys don't build much time which is why the airlines have some crazy formula to transfer their sorties into hours.

Yeah, fighter pilot combat hours are the same as dog years. It's tough maintaining that level of intensity for so long.

...^^^... Those were the guys that made things happened and never griped about doing what they had to do "to make things work".

He reminds me of some of the older guys (WW2) that mentored me and my grandfather (WW1) who raised me.

It was the way they were brought up in those times.

Good people doing great things in historic times.

Cheers to him and the memories

...^^^... This varied greatly depending on distance to target and mission with most rotary units in RVN.

But Rotary CAS in RVN, when flying off the float (LPH), to support BLT air and beach assault forces ...... was about 10% of total sortie time ... in the bad stuff and close in .... because no smart ordinance was available and probably could not have been used that close anyway.

Short and very intense situations with lots of intercom & radio chatter too.

In contrast with newer & better systems ... a buddy was in Iraq War in a AH-64 ... put a bunch of smart ordinance down range and only saw enemy (face to face in the distance) once when the chain gun was activated.
