Not gonna lie, on beautiful days like today I miss the Heep. But the other 275 days a year it sucked. Going to find a used cheaper TJ to have as a toy sometime.

First, thank you and your husband for your service. Next, there are so many variables and many great options all based on personal preference and style as well as many choices depending upon how the truck will be used its really ...really ...difficult to tell someone what they should do. Almost disrespectful if that makes any sense? Any mods can be undone but most are considerably expensive. To get the best handling, lift, and tires I would think the tires can easily be the least expensive component. It is however...plenty easy to share what worked for me on my v6, 2015 4x4 TRD off road access cab ...so ...if your budget allows I can strongly recommend All-pro Off-road Expedition leaf springs, u bolt flip, timbren bump stops, and most importantly what made the best difference for me was the full Icon stage 7 suspension system with the rear springs deleted due to the All Pro springs. I've got about a 4" lift in the rear (not much weight in the rear) and a 3" in the front. It's fully adjustable With easy to acess settings on each shock so it can be customized for any type of driving and terrain. This may provide some flexibility. Nitto Terra Grapplers all around. Drives like factory only better as the "touchy" brakes were completely tamed. I love this set up and can absolutely recommend it. If you're planning on adding a steel bumper and winch, get the stronger coil springs up front, 700#'rs. Don't skip the replacement upper control arms when doing a 3" lift. Best of luck. Good advice from everyone on the gift certificate. I suggest just giving him a blank check when he returns from deployment along with some pic's of what you like and prices and availability for some of the products recommended through the forum.

Alternative: Look for stock takeoffs rims with usable tires still on them on Craigslist. Resell later after upgrading.

I would not make a decision on tires either.

I think it is time for you to perhaps consider moving away from the "surprise" idea. Just talk to your husband and tell him the truth. Say that you need new tires ASAP, but that instead of buying some random tires you would like to do something nice for him by having the truck lifted with the new bigger tires he wanted.. so that the truck is built and ready for when he comes back from deployment. He will either say wait until he returns, OR, the two of you could then start working on the project together while he is away, which...in my humble opinion,...would be a great way of doing it.

    Exactly!

Why do people keep recommending this place? Are you all getting discounts from them LOL.

This is about building the truck as HE wants. This offroad shop, or any off road shop for that matter, is going to recommend what THEY want.

Totally different story if the OP knew what her husband wanted.

And how is this good advice? LOL :D

I'm on the "don't fuck with his truck without his input" wagon. My wife knows better than to even attempt to order parts for my truck. She even knows if I die there shall not be anybody else driving my truck. I'll be the most annoying ghost you've ever fathomed if such an event occurred.

The idea is nice, but not very realistic for most "car guys".

I'd ask if you were in Kansas given your username but you've already answered that question. Personally I would be very happy coming back from a deployment regardless. He's lucky to have you.

Because their prices are some of the best around (if not THE best) and their customer service in unmatched.

Well they surely know how to bring more business to the shop :D

But that does not help the OP. Even with the best prices, that shop will have zero idea about what her husband really wants.

Agreed, that's why I made a follow-up suggestion just to set some money aside for her husband so he can buy what he wants. I would be beyond excited if my wife did that.

Happy Easter, curmudgeon. I would get a gift cert. for a tire shop (for 33's OR NOT) to let him know her intentions when he returns from deployment and then support him with whatever he wants to do to his truck. If he doesn't want a lift then he can replace his bald tires. I might even take him out for dinner afterward OP.

I take it you've never ordered or spoken with them. They have good pricing and they dont "Sell" you a lift. They work with you for what you want and give recommendations on what will work for your desired build and budget regardless of whether they get a sale or not. Most people will give them the sale simply because of how great their customer service is.

That wasn't the point of my comment :D, was adding a little sarcasm. Read above.

It can be the best shop in the universe giving free stuff away and having the best customer service. But they cannot read minds. The OP still does not what her husband wants...and she needs new tires soon...hence the dilemma.

Now if this offroad shop is willing to install a lift kit and redo everything for free in case the OPs husband does not like it then we are talking business :D

Ok, a little voice of reason here. The tires on the truck are worn out. Considering that they are your only contact with the road, replace them with something decent. If you can't find out what your hubby wants before he gets home, at least you and your little one will be safe. And you can always always sell the tires when he lifts it and puts other tires on it. You'll get a good portion of the tire money back.

for the time being, find some cheap stock take offs. I sold my stock tires about 6 months after i got my truck for like 180 bucks, they had all of 9k miles on them. Something like that would hold you over till he gets back.
