To answer the original question in this thread, I bought a 2016 4cyl 4x2 SR5 back in August last year because it was super cheap, like $24K. Well, winter came hard here in portland and this was nearly worthless on the ice. I had to buy studded tires to get me through the rest of this severe winter. Trust me, I've lived in New England and know what winter driving is like, but it's nothing like black ice and I plowed streets!

Well, 8 months later, I traded it in and got a '17 TRD DCLB OR and haven't looked back. The V6 power is smooth and has similar MPGs to the 4 banger.

TLDR; spend more money to get a V6. You won't regret it if you do, like I did.

Your issue seems to have been more the lack of 4x4 than the lack of V6.

Partly, but the lack of HP didn't help me get out of the deeper snow, even with studded tires.

The website doesn't allow you to truly "build" a truck.

You can only "build" one in a configuration that is available in your region.

    Edit:
Somethings also vary by region. For example here in socal if you get a v6 you have to get the tow package.

Best to hit the dealership and sit down with a salesman and get one built. You might find what you are looking for on cars.com - that is where I found my truck.

The only issue is that the salesmen will always give you incomplete (and in many cases misleading or downright incorrect) information and will always be wishy-washy on the cost differences between different trims, configurations and options selected. At least the website gives MSRP update with every change you make.

I can promise you that my v6 doesn't give even 18, and my truck is completely stock as of date and I've had it nearly a year now.
Not even once on all the fill-ups I've had my avg was any better than 18. I reset my trip meter between fill-ups and I've calculated this average so many times, I stopped keeping count.
So you are not alone in the low mpgs bracket. And for your thoughts that v6 gives better ..umpf, you are wrong on that one too.
The torque curve of a v6 sucks so bad at the low end rpm's, you'd feel like you are driving a 4 cyl.
There is a difference between what the graph shows on the dyno compared to how the truck actually performs on the street. You can't expect the torque curve from your dyno test with your trucks actual performance.
And trust me, trading up will only give you a placebo effect. As much as everyone here likes to piss on @smitty99, these two trucks drive about the same.
As for wanting to mod up, you might want to ask Corey @moe2o4 , he swears by performance increases. Although I have a feeling he's single because of this truck though.

The 4 bangers kick ass. Everyone who owns a 3rd gen v6 and even the auto v6 around me love there trucks. A lot of people own these trucks around here I often talk to them at the gas stations. None of them complain about the shifting, I don't even bring it up, they love the trucks, and that means they don't know or care about this forum lol.

No reason to swear by the performance increases when I have the dyno sheets to prove the increases right here!

With the AFE intake the the LCE header it's about a 15-16 ft lbs. of torque and up!

Not at 2000 rpm, I get that the LCE helps but not worth it for me. AFE definitely not.

No doubt, just not enough for me. Do you have a separate AFE run, maybe I missed it.

That's not how the configure website works.

    The other guy is correct.

Build Your Tacoma website only allows you to configure a truck based on what is already on a dealer lot in your sales region or allocated to arrive at a dealer lot in your sales region. So your region only has white access cabs with utility packages.

You can get a 2.7 in any configuration and any color normal color, except TRD/Limited trims and you can't get a DCLB. DCSB only with an auto trans.

It's a sales ploy not a completely configurable website, the entire intent is to put a person in a dealership showroom.
