Lift kit and tire suggestions to surprise my deployed husband?

I also sold my stock take offs for $180 and some guy drove 300+miles round trip to get them. They probably had 90% tread left with mint condition Sport wheels.

Thanks everyone for the advice. First off, I'd like to say in my defense that I was simply asking for advice on brands and such. Perhaps I didn't make that clear in my original post, but I would never just pick something out and have it put on without knowing that it was exactly what he wanted. That's the whole reason why the tires haven't been replaced, because in spite of asking about it repeatedly the last few months I still haven't gotten an answer. I know dealerships can jerk you around to try to empty out your pockets, but the cords are showing on 2 of the tires, I noticed it the one time that I had to put air in the one tire that apparently has 4 punctures, two of which I knew about because I saw the nails. I know better than to make a decision like this about his truck without knowing exacts, trust me. That being said, I ended up just telling him about my intentions, which he was totally surprised and over the moon about. Annnnnd he told me that he really had no idea of exactly what he wanted or what was best lol. So, the headstrong place is apparently closed for a move, but once they reopen I play to give Marie a call to talk it over with her and then will relay that information and the options to my husband. I found a set of used coopers for a good price, and will be getting those put on in the meantime so that I don't have to worry about a tire blowing while I'm driving down the road. Also cleared that one with him too! I know that it's his truck and is therefore his decision which is why I intended on finding out what exactly he was wanting before I made a single purchase, I was just looking for suggestions on where to start. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive but I was trying to do something nice not totally f up his truck and his world y'all.

265/75/R16 BFGoodrich KO2's or 265/70/R17s (about 32" tire; depending on what wheels you got 16"'s or 17"s) good enough for daily driving and offroading plus their great in the winter. These tires to me are the best of the best; nothing beats them for durability and everyday usage with weekend offroading. Quiet on the highway too. You can fit 33" tires but too much work with cutting; removing mudflaps yada yada; I actually prefer the mudflaps on, just because I'd hate rocks to beat up the side of the truck.

Good budget lift; Bilstien 5100's set at 3rd notch (1.75") - Get 1.5" Toytec Add a leaf in the rear_ Handles great and doesn't burn a hole in the wallet.

My recommendation; if you ain't doing hardcore mudding or offroading avoid the Mud tires; look cool but if your on tarmac 90% of the time your just burning money as they wear quickly; makes a lot of noise and uncomfortable for daily use.

I think what you are doing for your husband is great. Your approach to handling it is also spot on. Keep it up and I know Marie will get you all the info you need so that you and you're husband can make a great choice that he will be happy with.

    Hello again!

So, I'm confused on something. My husband is saying that he really wants the dealership to install the lift kit, but I asked, and they don't even do that, just leveling kits, and from what I've read, the dealership is the one place that you want to avoid getting it installed at. My husband's concern is the warranty being voided by installing the kit. I'm not 100% sure what kind of warranty we've got on it as it was purchased used, certified preowned FWIW, I would have to look at the paperwork to see what all was covered. But, what exactly about the warranty does it void? Or does it even void anything? I mean, they obviously wouldn't cover anything that we put on secondarily. Also, any tips on wheel brands? Or maybe what to avoid?

Sorry if these are dumb questions but my husband isn't really sure about any of it either, so I'm just trying to get as much info as I can since he doesn't have a strong enough internet connection to research it himself, not to mention the lack of time in which to do it. He's got an old '69 Landcruiser FJ40 which he's researched repairs and mods on tirelessly but I think the Tacoma has been kind of an afterthought. Plus there are waaaaayyyyyyyy more options for the truck than there are for the FJ40!

Im sure the factory 3yr or 30k mile warranty is already expired. Unless the previous owner had gotten an extension or different waranty plan.

Call the dealer and ask. I'm sure your out of warranty and or it won't void anything other than the suspension.

    Tips:
    -stay away from leveling kits.
-cant go wrong with King, icon or fox suspension
    -ome suspension is good
-as for wheels, you cant go wrong with method race wheels or @SCSPerformance wheels.

I would look into the OME bp51 kit. I've decided on this kit but with all Pro rear leafs. Pricey but looks like it might be worth it.

Even if you installed it at the dealership and still under warranty; they will still void your warranty on suspensions because it was an option you chosen to install and not them. Ask them first; If they say it will not void the warranty; MAKE SURE TO GET IT IN WRITING and SIGNED by someone because when you need warranty work to be done; they are going to REJECT you! I guarantee it. Dealerships are there to make money, lying to you is one way to get it. If it aint written it aint true.

There sure are a lot of real sweet peaches on this site. Yeesh. I work full time, run a small business part time, am taking full time classes, have a 3 year old, 2 dogs, and take care of the house, bills, and yard. My family is 1200 miles away, as are my inlaws, so I do everything on my own when my husband is gone, which is a lot even when he's not deployed. As much as I would like it to be, my brain isn't always firing on all cylinders. I came for advice and suggestions, not to feel the need to defend myself for trying to do something for my husband that would take him a long time to do for himself. Will definitely think twice before doing that again.

Each time you modify a vehicle you run the risk of being denied for warranty work. Sadly, it is the nature of the beast.

Unlike a lot of people on here there are a few of us who completely understand what you wives do back here while we are deployed. You did nothing wrong and were smart to ask for help and ideas. It sounds like your husband doesn't really know what he wants either, therefore I think he would be happy with something very simple like an OME setup. Marie at Headstrong will do a great job at hooking yall up with something very fitting. Not sure how many miles your husbands truck has on it but my 2013 is pretty much done on any warranty it may have had. I would assume yours is probably pretty close as well. I wouldn't really worry too much about what warranties may be voided with a lift. There are many shops who are very competent at installing lifts, if you cant find one I am sure the TW community could help in some way to figure out how to get a lift installed for ya. Unfortunately as you have found out there are a lot of douches here on the site that are quick to judge and make you sound like the bad guy for trying to do something special for your husband. I am very picky about my truck as well but I can assure you if I had come back from deployment and my wife had taken the time to do the research and lift my truck, I would have been extremely happy. I know that there would have been things that probably wouldn't have been done like I would want them but they would have been fixed or changed out down the road as time permitted but at least it would have been lifted and she would have accomplished her task. That being said, keep doing the great job that you are doing and although it is tuff to do, try to just sort through the BS and take what useful info you can gather from here and make your husband a very happy man when he gets back.
