Received my first Tacoma this past Christmas. After saving up, it's ready for mods. I'd like to get it as off-road ready as possible before the summer begins... what would you all recommend?

I'm anxious to upgrade the sound. I am thinking about the Magnaflow cat back Off-Road exhaust system and some sort of cold air induction, although there are restrictions in my home state of Arizona.

I really just need advice on which mods to get and the order in which to get them. My truck is red and I'd like to focus on performance (without getting a new performance chip) before I put money into aesthetics and all of that. I've already purchased a 3" lift, Method wheels, BFGoodrich KO2 tires, and a Tonneau cover. Thank you all!

How much do you have to spend?

Sounds and an exhaust are NOT mods to make a vehicle off road ready..Unless you're looking to chop the stock exhaust over the axle so you clear obstacles.

    PS..Hi scooter

Neither will help anything power wise or off road wise.

Good, because there is no chip.

Are you experienced driving off road? Invest in an offroad driving school if not. I see several in your state, which is good.

Experienced with recovery? Oriented to survival should a breakdown occur in the wild? Have tools, recovery gear, survival basics, first aide basics, communication gear, and know how to use them all?

That's where your focus should be. Unless by offroad you mean something more sedate.

Can't be. The truck is red. That's important.

    Hey Scott-

Thanks for the response. I am not a crazy off-roader, but I am starting to do it more often. I care about my truck's sound and some aesthetic features, which is why I am starting with sound upgrades. However, I'd like to make my vehicle more off-road capable. Thinking of starting the next round of mods with a Steelcraft LED bull bar with an attached skid plate. Thoughts on that?

See what I replied to Scott above... My budget is pretty limited. Would like to spend as little as possible but still put on quality parts/mods haha.

Haha @Clearwater Bill -- and to answer your questions above: I am not extremely experienced with off-road driving, so a school would likely be the best option for me. I do not plan on doing anything insane in my truck, but I'd like to have fun tearing up some Arizona desert trails. Thanks for the response!

@Skrain @taczilla I'm prepared to wait and continue saving up... No need to get all the mods I want at once. What would you guys recommend doing first? This car will be my plaything as well as a commuter to the city for school. I like a beefy sound. I'd much rather get sounds and performance upgraded before I focus on aesthetics. It's tough to choose a cold-air intake because most of them are restricted in Arizona. Lemme know... Thanks fellas!

Welcome to TW! What Bill and Cup Cake and the others have told you is gospel. It don't mean shit what your truck sounds like if you keep getting stuck and have no way to cantact somebody or get yourself out. I can dig being on a limitted budget so with that in mind spend your dollars where they will benefit you most. For the money you'll spend on a decent cat back you could buy some good skids or maybe some weld on sliders. For God's sake if you go off road go with somebody

Bah!... desert trails, my ass. Come do some Canadian backwoods abandoned logging trails. Bring a chain saw.

That'll learn you up big time.

    Truth.

Welcome to the site. As you've previously stated saving up/waiting to get the right parts is a really the best bet. Plenty of research on here and friendly advise will help most of all.
