Reverse is finicky on my 1968 GTO with M-20 (Muncie) 4 speed.

Reverse was finicky on my 2003 TRD OR Ext Cab Tacoma 5 speed manual.

I think it is just a manual trans thing.

My Mustang occasionally fights me on Reverse too, the easiest Gearboxes to hit Reverse in my past have been VWs.

Reverse has sometimes been tough to get into all of manuals over the years. I simply run through the gear or 1 to 2 or maybe 1,2, 3 and then it usually slips right in :anonymous:. Never really thought about it, its like the tranny needs to re-sync.

I am so glad I found this thread. The 3rd gear notchy-ness and grind has driven me crazy. I have 600 miles and it really "grinds my gears." I have driven Honda and Mazda in manual and have never had this issue, but none of them were trucks. I thought I ruined the synchros within the first 1000 miles.

    Definitely not alone.

My '16 (8,500 miles) is notchy in 3rd and if I hit a bump mid shift has had a slight grind. Never had the reverse issue though. Actually yesterday I was occasionally having an issue getting 1st at a light but I think that was a one off case.

My STi used to be notchy in third as well. My Vette won't grab 1st or reverse sometimes without going to neutral and releasing the clutch first.

Exactly how I feel, I have around 860 miles and I accidentally cooked my third gear synchro a little bit 3 times in the first 400 miles, each time It happened, it hurt me on the inside! Lol. Similar thing happen in 1st and reverse once as well to me, I thought I had the shifter pushed in far enough but both gears weren't meshed properly and they ground too, I wanted to cry!

3rd gear was a little notchy in mine for the first month or so...it either got better or I just got used to it. The only thing I notice now is a little bit of a clunk sometimes right after shifting (especially into 4th, 5th, 6th).

mine might be a little bit notchy if my aim isn't true, in other words if i'm not paying attention. so it basically never happens now.

The OP is "scraping" 3rd gear. Not sure if that is similar to grinding.

For those with notchy 3rd gear, does it involve "scraping"?

    Just does not seem normal.

i would say that the only time i've experienced something like scraping, it was me messing up my clutch work, not the shift. if i shift wrong i may have a little two or three quick notchy hits or if i really miss it then it won't go in. but no scraping.

to answer the OP, my 3rd gear does feel a little scrappy, it goes in gear easily but does not feel like a buttery smooth click into gear, more like metal rubbing and getting "sucked" into gear. BTW I am also a little concerned about my 1st gear, atleast 4 times in 900 miles it has become blocked and then I grind it a little because it feels like it is in gear but the gears have not meshed completely, has anyone experienced this yet.

Same here, gets smoother the more you drive it.

The notchy 3rd gear is a slight grind, it's really noticeable. All my other gears feel the same or close to the same except 3rd gear.

Update...(I made the original post) I now have another couple of weeks of driving. Here's what I have noticed. The scraping, not smooth into slot of third gear still exists. However I noticed that as it warms up, the issue lessens, AND if I shift from 2nd into 3rd over 3000rpms it shifts perfectly into the slot. The problem is more pronounced shifting at lower rpms.

Still letting it "ride" for now and see what happens. I have mentioned it several times to the dealer so it is well documented.
