Yakima cross bars mounted to bed rails?

Hey guys this is my first post so bare with me. I have read a few of the items listed on this thread and seen a few photo's of what other taco owners have done. First let me say that I tried to get a pair of the tacoma crossbars from Toyota, forget it, it wont happen. Second, I already had a set of yakima cross bars, Thule will do as well and saved myself a few dollars. First of all I measured the distance across the bed (57 inches). I then took the end caps of the Yakima bars and cut my bars accordingly. I then replaced my caps and placed the bars in the bed, resting on the adjustable cargo sliding tie-downs pics will follow). I then used a 1 1/8 inch u clamp to go over the bars and then secured the bars to the tie-downs. Once the bars are attached in the truck bed you can attach any Yakima or Thule attachment, depending on which bars you use, to the bars and still have plenty of room under the bars to load cargo. This is the set up I used, so far I love it. I have a 2005 white 4x4 doulble cab extended bed, it came with a bed cap and I hated how it looked, however I found myself wanting something in the back so that I could stow gear in the winter or rain. The other day I attached my ski carrier to the bars and then rotated them so they were facing down, then attached my cargo box over them, and then attached my bike mounts to the bars as well. I do understand that there is a weight concern, so try to keep the weight under 100lbs.

 

Yeah I bought the same U bolts. I had it set up like that for a while but didn't like the flimsy look. It does the job though doesn't it. I should just do it that way and live with it.

 

Are the bars installed yet?

 

Bars not installed yet. Received the stays for a regular bed not c channels. Bars are sturdy. Hopefully the stays will arrive and I'll post some pictures. Stay tuned.

 

I cut my Yakima bars and attached them with my U bolts like breakcontact did. I'm very surprised but it works perfectly! Bars are attached super tightly and there's no play at all in the bars. It looks flimsy but it works like a dream. Old Yakima bars + $6 in U bolts = success! I'll take some pics with all my attachments on and post soon.

YOU BEAT ME TO IT!

 

I finally got the INNO Stays and Bars installed. I first received the wrong stays that would not work with C Channel. I've attached pictures of the stays out of the box and assembled, mounted on the c channel, assembling the bars, the Yakima mounts, and last bike racks mounted on the bars.

The Yakima mounts convert from round to Square bars quite easily. Pry them open and use scissors to cut them out.

I know I have room for at least one more bike rack, maybe 2 if I do more racks with front wheel on.

Nice work guys. I just picked up a pair of Yakima Outdoorsman racks off CL...bout half price. Only thing is...they don't fit! Time to customize...I'm looking to have new angle iron welded to the uprights that will overlap the taco bed channel so I can secure it w/ something like 3/8 hardware.




Ideas always welcome

I have a set of Yakima rack mounts that will mount to the stock roof rack, BUT I'm tryin to come up with a plan/idea to mount them to the tops of the bed rails because I plan to install a BAK RollBak bed cover which of course will cover up the rails mounted in the bed. I'd like to carry the bike on top of the bed rails and close the cover to protect gear.

I would also recommend the Yakima tracks and control towers. I'm not sure if you can mount them to your bed rails but I've seen it mounted on top of a hard tonneau cover (see below). Keep in mind that these are permanent track systems that require drilling.

 

I wanted to put some Thule bars across my bed to put bikes on it while keeping storage space under them. I already had a Thule rack for my car so went with the 58" bars incase I want to use the towers and these 58" bars on top of the truck.

I liked the Toyota bars, but they were pricey as is the Inno Rack system, plus the 58" bars won't work.... Tried the U-bolt method with the tie downs, but wanted to keep those free for use as tie downs...

I came up with using 5/8"x3" bolts with the hex washer with another nut to lock it all together. Then I stacked some dense rubber pads under the load bars, placed one pad on top, then used (2) hose clamps to hold it all together. It seems to work well, but think I will add a washer against the bed rails and maybe double up the bolt system in the back to stop it from twisting. I don't mind some twist since the bike carrier will stop the twisting, but I plan on placing the front tire holder on the rear bar which will apply a twisting motion. All in all this will be around $20 for the holding system.

 

i have the yakima fat cat snowboard rack..will it mount onto those crossbars from inno?!?
