Planning on getting my reverse bulbs in Wednesday.

Really want to see what kind of a difference there is.

How often are you going through caps?

 

First one lasted three years. This one has been 9 months.

 

Did it just get really hot there?

 

Hot, cold, wet, dry; it's not been the same three days in a row. 100% humidity, and it's a tight house. This is the only way to get the moisture out of the house.

Just put in a new filter too, and it's a Honeywell and not an el cheapo.

 

Damn. The top swollen on it? Is it humming and the fan not running?

Did you check the contactor to make sure there weren't ants in it? Or are you pushing the fan blade to get it going?

Yep, though the cap looks normal. The compressor fan cranks right up when I spin it with a long screwdriver so I know it's the cap.

 

Fire ants love contactors. They love electric switching equipment in general. They will crawl in there and kill the connection and prevent the contactor from closing. Thus your a/c no worky. Very common problem.

 

My dad retired from the Army and went into the HVAC business and retired from that also. Dad passed away in 95. Mom ended up getting remarried to you guessed it. A guy that owned his own HVAC company. lol

Been around the working bits of them my whole life. I don't know a whole lot but I can diagnose and fix some of the simple problems.

 

I asked because there are always ants crawling on the outside unit wiring and sometimes around the unit inside. Cheap ant bait keeps them dead inside.

Yeah you want to make your a/c as unpleasant as you can for ants to be around. Keep any plants away from it and keep grass cut down low. They make a electrical ant spray for that kind of thing too. Damn ants will cost you getting in your a/c unit.

Unless it's something easy to diagnose like I've mentioned. Our last unit we had liked to blow $160 wholesale circuit boards. We bought a new unit after it happened the second time. Fuck that gremlin. Went bigger also each time. We've replaced ours twice. This one has been in about 3 years I think, maybe 4 and it will run your ass out of the house it gets so cold. Hell, it doesn't run much but when it does it will give you goose bumps if you're around one of the vents.

 

I rent, so it's technically not my responsibility. But I do take care of the place.

 

Gotcha. Never hurts to help yourself also though. Oh and mulch around a a/c is a no no also. Attracts ants.

 

To hell with mulch. And flower beds. Aint got time fo dat lol

I need to do some scrubbing of the outside before too long.
