I just picked up my 17 Trd Tacoma last Saturday the transmission shifts the same way my 2012 tundra did , takes time but you'll get use to it seems it's the way six speeds are for toyotas

Why do the 8 speed automatics in full sized Silverados shift better than the 6 speed in the tacoma? Swing and a WHIFF toyota

Coming from a 1990 T4R 3.0 V6 4 speed auto that would hardly go into 4th even at 110-120km/h (70ish mph?) or wouldn't go into 2nd from 1st for at least 10-15 minutes after you start driving. The AT in the Tacoma is a god send. Does it hunt for gears sometimes, sure, but it's not the worst AT you could have. (I also had an auto 1996 Integra that I purchased when I needed a car asap. That was god awful, I quickly bought a manual one after). End of the day 9/10 I am happy with the automatic. And if I want to drive a manual I'll just jump into my RSX Type S haha

The 4.0L and tranny in our 2016 4Runner is far superior to my 2016 Tacoma

My 2017 Off road Taco seem to shift better after 5k miles. First 1k was terrible. Its still clunky when you slow down and want to speed up again but i think that's most automatics. Maybe a break in period? Who knows.

Yes it down shifts randomly usually when you don't want it to...then when you want power like to pass there's a huge kickdown delay

Exactly! Also if you try to speed up 1-2 mph with your cruise control it all ways down shifts no matter the occasion and some times get stuck at a high rpm. Not sure if anyone had that issue too. I normally just press the gas and reset it.

Negative. I'm not gonna try to convince him if he doesn't like it. Get rid of it cause a fix isn't on the horizon any time soon.

What tells you that? They've already made two attempts via TSB to improve it. They just haven't hit a bingo yet.

They know they've got an issue. 3 or 4 new people post threads about it here every day. JD power, consumer reports and car & Driver have ripped the auto trans.
