I just got a 2010 4x4 double cab with automatic transmission v6. At about 350 miles I have started to notice an annoying whine or humming sound at about 40 mph. It goes away at higher speeds but when I let off the gas and it comes back down to 40mph the sound comes back. WTF is it? Is this common or am I hearing things?

Go to your dealer and test drive another one just like yours.
If that one makes the same noise then maybe they all do it.
If it doesn't, then it's time to take it in and have it fixed or explained.
I haven't noticed any noise like that in mine yet.

It might be the engine braking. I thought the same thing when i first drove mine. Now i don't even notice it.

What's engine braking? So yours made that noise at the same speed? I thought at first it might be the wheel bearings

From what i understand it was designed to make the automatic perform more like a manual transmission. Some also call it downhill assist or downhill braking. The first time i really noticed it was when i was driving in a funeral procession. We stayed at about 35 mph for about 10 miles and it drove me nuts. You can probably search and find out more!

06 4x4 with 80,500 miles. Mine has made the same noise for as long as I can remember. Its called "critical speed". Critical speed is when you get a machine at a certain RPM or Speed, the harmonics of all the rotating parts put out "tones/vibrations". When they all merge together it can make a noticable sound. Im my case it sounds like I am running down the street with mud tires on. The key here is to make sure it does not get louder over time. Also keep up with your regular maintenance with all fluids and grease the u-joints and drive lines if applicable. These will act as dampers for the vibrations keeping the noise and normal wear down.
