Sagging Suspension

I have a 3" toytec lift with an add a leaf in the rear with stock bilstien shocks on a 2012 DCSB. The truck set and rode great, but now that I have added a camper top and a rtt it sags just a bit and if I haul anything it sags bad! My question is could I just replace the stock shocks in the rear with 2" lift 5100's or should I address my leafs? Thanks.

 

Replacing the shocks will do nothing for the sag. If you are carrying that much weight a full leafpack like dakars might be a good option.

 

Agreed man, you need springs that can handle more load. Dakars would be great...the stock suspension is not designed to have that much load on a consistent basis. Not that I think you would damage it in the interim or anything, but the sag wont go away until the RTT does, or you get a new leaf pack.

 

Ok thanks guys, that was my initial response as well until i started getting mixed reviews about replacing the stock shocks. I would have already done both, but I bought the truck the way it sits today. Would you recommend the OME shocks with the dakars or 5100s?

 

I think many go with 5100s, but Im sure others will chime in with more experience with these. I unfortunately don't have any personal experience with dakars.

 

I was in the same boat as you. Installed the 2" AAL then hooked up out family's toon once and the sag started right away. The AAL lasted about 3k and rode terrible. Now, I have the full Dakar leaf pack with the

I would go OME with Dakars as they are designed to work with the Dakar leaf packs. I had OME but then got 12" Billies

 

I specifically went with the extended travel 5100s with my dakars because the dakars give you a ton of lift in back and with the extended travel bilsteins you can get much more flex. The OME shocks will severely limit the flex you will get.

Of course you have alot more weight back there anyway pushing down on the springs, so it might not be an issue.

 

Will my factory bumpstops mount up with the dakars or will I have to order new ones to mount in the frame?

 

Your factory bumpstops WILL mount up just fine, but they probably won't be high enough to prevent damage to your shocks when they are fully compressed.

 

Add a leaf is only as good as it's foundation. If you're still using the original Toyota leaf springs then you have to willingly accept the sag. Toyota leaf springs are NOTORIOUS for sagging as they age (especially with weight on them).

You either need to put a full set of Dakar leaf springs or some other brand that's better quality than the OEM Toyota ones.

Dakar leaf springs: Snugtop Topper + 300-400lbs of shit in the rear. It doesn't droop any.

Springs hold the weight. Not shocks.

 

What do you have up front? I have a 2017 DC LB that is getting a cap this week and will be hauling camping/hunting stuff often. I'm thinking Dakars, but I'm really not looking to lift the truck much at all to avoid vibration issues and such BUT with adding the Dakars, I'd have to lift the front (OME Springs & shocks) to get it close to level right?

 

Anyone know where the best place to buy dakar springs and OME shocks is? Im looking at @ToyTec Lifts but shipping is killer.

I just got the Dakar shocks with the OME nitro sport shocks as well as the u-bolts and bushing and a rear drive shaft carrier bearing kit all for 600$ from a local dealer. Do I need to use the rear drive shaft carrier drop?

 

I did from the start. No vibrations or anything.

 

Is there any difficulty to the drop?

 

None whatsoever.

 

Just a little personal experience, I added the

$77 D29XL Leaf Spring

D29XL AAL to my Dakars for extra support. I was worried about the harsh ride with only a topper and prinsu toprac on it most of the time. 3 months now and I am really impressed by the ride quality, it a little stiffer than normal but still a great ride. I would recommend adding it before installing your dakars.
