Going full black has always looked like you put a 'new' hood on but never painted it. It's probably just a personal taste thing, but I've replaced enough body panels over the years and they always come in black so it just looks unfinished to me.

Dip is about the easiest route. It will hold up to most things and as long as you do at least 4 good coats you can just peel it off if you change your mind. Just mask well and pull your tape before the last coat is 100% dry.

Gloss black will show every little possible flaw. Matte black will hide things better and matte gray is about as good as you'll find for hiding things. If you're ever doing actual paint and want a gloss black finish, you better spend a LOT of time making sure everything is done right or else you'll be seeing every little wave for the rest of your life.

I like the silver left across the very front of the hood. Nice look!

Thanks to Indy, I used his pinstripe idea when I did mine yesterday.
This was my first time ever using Plasti Dip, but I thought I had it all planned out. I used wax remover to clean the hood, followed up with isopropyl alcohol. Then laid down the pinstripe; two parallel lines with the inside one forming the edge and be peeled off.

Temp was in the mid 50s and I used a combination of sun and engine heat to keep the hood and can of Plasti Dip warm.

Manufacturer recommends 4-5 coats, and I did 6. Manufacturer recommends waiting no less than 30 min between coats and I did at exactly the 30 min mark. So in other words, I did it as quickly as I could and only did one extra coat. I removed all all masking immediately after spraying the 6th coat.

End result was disappointing. There is no clean line where I pulled up the pinstripe. Not only are there "boogers" of dip still stuck on it, but there are a few places where it pulled it off of the hood on the part where I wanted it to be. I went slow and used acute angles to pull up the masking. I also used a credit card on the edge of the masking to help hold the dip down.

    So 2 questions:
    1) What did I do wrong?
    2) How do I cut off the boogers without leaving scratch marks in the paint, which would happen if I used an exacto knife.

I plan to cut off the uneven edge and lay down another pinstripe to cover up the edge.

    EDIT:
I found this in another thread. Apparently I should have pulled up the masking tape after ?? time, and then reapplied it. That would be weird.

That's how I darken up the decal on my hood. It gets light after a wash. So some tire shine and all better!

Same happened to mine. I used a exact. I'm sure my clear coat is screwed now. I need to pull mine and redo it. ... I'm going to look into a sticker or actually have it painted. But I like the partial black hood.

You want to pull when it's still wet and soft. With paint the tape will basically cut a clean line because it's dries hard. Dip stays flexible and will stretch and pull. You pull it pretty quickly after the final coat, after its no longer runny but way before its dry. Every coat will soften the coat below it so if you wait too long to pull you can just do an extra coat and wait a little bit for the hard coats to soften. You want to use the correct method also, doubling the tape back on itself sharply, never pull up.

Fwiw I was in the habit of pulling tape when using paint fairly soon as well, got better stripes that way.

If it's sticking and pulling, its too dry and set.

The original hood on my truck flew up and got destroyed when it hit, and broke the windshield. I ordered a hood (they all come matte black needing a clear coat or painted to your color), and the hood showed up destroyed. When the new hood shows up, I am most likely just going to get it clear coated black, and throw it on. Should be within the next week, when it gets here I'll drop some pics.

I'm happy to report that trimming off the edges of the Plasti Dip and applying pinstripe tape along the edge worked out nicely.
The only downside is the pinstripe that is on the original paint is nice and smooth, but the new tape that's on the Plasti Dip conformed to the bumpy texture of the Plasti Dip. So it stands out since they are right beside each other, but I can totally live it.

seriously though, how come you guys didn't line-up the hood black even with the black grille? I think it'd look a lot cooler if it evened up.

Because it wouldnt. The the paints following the body lines. To go outside might look good at 100 feet, would look like absolute crap closer?.

I get ya, didn't see that 'till I looked at my hood again. Looking at Colchicine's, his hood humps seem to disappear under that black.
