Its not a whining issue. I love everything about my truck except the transmission. I had two FJs and a 4Runner and all three shifted fine. Whoever at Toyota came up with the 3rd gen trans, should be beaten.

With 6k on my 2017 and after having the original trans TSB performed and the trans fluid topped up at 500 miles, and the TSB REV 1 performed at 5k, I'm very happy with how the trans is shifting now.

    A few minor things...
    First... Go here

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...be-low-on-fluid-directly-from-factory.405642/

    Then... Go here

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/check-your-u-joints.409042/

If your truck came with the towing package there is a pretty good chance that your transmission fluid is low due to the extra oil cooler loop at the radiator. Go in and have it MANUALLY checked. It's a sealed unit so unless it's tripped it's thermal protection warning, plugging in will tell them nothing. Mine had the same issue and they added 1.5qt ATF and did the TSB which takes 1k miles to actually work because the truck learns from your driving habits.

Common problem. Mine is fixed and it works great now.

Another thing to think about is the new engine is not a low-end-torque machine. It will never be, so if you're expecting low end torque you won't get it. The engine loves being above 3k rpm. Which is fine, but you have to get used to it.

    I just don't get it.
I'm too dumb or too much of a fanboy (this is my first toyota) to understand what all this is about.
It's not a stellar shifting experience, but it's certainly not as bad as the drama portrayed here- for me anyway.

Yup, I think some people might not like to wind the 3.5 up, but I do it all the time, and like you said, It likes it.

How do you wind it up without hitting the throttle all the time? It's not a manual.

And here's the video explaining how it works!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt9EPN70ueA

TL;DR: Lower compression ratio means you can run lower octane fuel but get more power/volume out of the engine since it doesn't have to fight to compress a full cylinder of air.

I have an automatic. Hit the gas and let the engine sing.

That's why the 3rd gen next to me on the way to work everyday is always racing me. Lol

I get on the highway and bring it up to 70 with cruise control and let the truck do what it wants. The engine is not a torque monster so it needs to rev up. Oh well!

The 3rd gens are reasonably quick, but by no means a racing truck haha. I'd pick an ecoboost for that.

I believe its a manual pro but he always brings that baby up like a motor cycle. At first thought he was racing me everyday but now I feel he just getting in the power band.

Reminds me of a big turbo car but in an n/a motor. Either way it's dam sexy and I get jealous everytime I see it.

To tell the truth I'm not happy with my 2nd gen throttle response and very low end. Almost like power has a dead spot going from a stop.

:bananadead:I heard you can overclock your engine/tranny together if you add a couple more screws and hack the software.... I overclock my computers By tossing some water on it and calling it a night when I die playing video games. It's called Emo rage. :deadhorse::facepalm::frusty::evil::infantry::pccoffee::smash::smash:

I want this update. I found the TSB for 2016's, but what is the TSB # for 2017 Transmission update?

I think it is too. Not finding one specific to 2017. I am headed to the dealer Friday morning with TSB in hand. I will follow up here with a post on what comes of it all.

    Thanks amigos!

I blame the traction control. I recommend anyone with an auto driving the Taco with it off.

What I don't understand is why is this an update for 2017 instead of the default software installed during assembly?
