Hmmm, wonder what tan on a spruce would look like. Anyone have any experience with how those clean up?

I've been trying to come up with options to run a RTT on my non-reinforced roof Leer (beggars can't be choosers on Craigslist) and short of buying a commercial grade topper, the next best thing is something like this....

You could make interior bars or bracing in your fiberglass top for super cheap. Does your top have tracks?

My Leer does have a set of Thule tracks. I was considering something like that as I found someone on Expedition Portal that had done the same.

    DSC_0142.jpg

I found the company that did that one and it was Metal Tech down in Portland. I contacted them but they said it was a one-off and weren't able to do another one because they didn't have the equipment anymore.

Not sure what it would cost for a custom job, I figured it would be prohibitive :notsure:

Honestly I wouldn't be worried about it. Kolt (can't remember his new username) ran a huge RTT on a non-reinforced shell with no problems all he did was add 2 more cross bars to distribute the weight more evenly. Thats what i'd do

Yeah, I would say you'd be fine with an RTT on a non-reinforced canopy. They weigh, what, 150 pounds at the most? That's just fine for driving around, and when you're actually in the tent the truck isn't moving and the static load rating for even a non-reinforced canopy is pretty high.

Good to know.....I wasn't sure if I was going to get cracking of the fiberglass but I'd be willing to give that a go.

I couldn't find actual numbers of static load capacity on Leer caps. I know with the RTT, two adults and the roof rack I was figuring about 550lbs.

Also when you are at camp half of the weight is on the ladder. So you could always sleep with half your body on the ladder side and your feet over the cap half

If you go to some place like metal tech. I think we could accomplish the same sort of thing for cheap.

The 150 load rating on most canopies is to match that of most auto manufacturers for the vehicles dynamics. Yes fiberglass is weak but, Isnt that weak.

IMG_0192.jpg IMG_0193.jpg I can make plasma cut t shapes with ease. It benefits me since I will be doing this to my top in the future.
