I hate flying so I will usually take off so I have enough time to drive if I need to go anywhere. I took the Cadillac to Florida abd my cousin was trying to get me to go out to Gandy Bridge or something to race but it didn't work out. Other than getting to enjoy my car that trip sucked. Houston, Texas to St. Petersburg, Florida and back in 4 days with terrible storms the whole time and I drove the entire time except one hour. I ended up letting my mom drive so i I could nap and i woke up an hour later to her saying "This thing doesn't feel like it's going 100" so I was awake at that point and got back behind the wheel.

SAME. My boss and work wife both HATE road trips. They'd rather fly than ever be in a car. But road trips are so satisfying. I wish I could take them more often!

The thing is you miss so many parts of the country if you fly. I've gotten to see things I would have never seen if I wasn't driving.

100% agree. The journey is the best part and all the philosophical bullshit.

I've wanted to hop a train across the country like a hobo since I was in college. I still think it would be a great way to see the country

I agree, just kick back & enjoy the ride, eat on the dining car, sleep & go to the bathroom all without stopping.
I wish the auto train went west, the wife & I have talked about taking the auto train up to DC to see the sights. It leaves from the Orlando area around 4 pm & you get to the stop in VA at like 9 the next morning.

I think the concept is great, but I don't think it's for me... I must be in control. That would be the opposite of being in control.

Plot your stops and hop on other trains when necessary. Just bring a bag of necessities, some cash and a guitar. You'll have plenty of time to learn to play if you don't already know how.
And you'll have plenty of Americana to write and sing about.
