    hey guys, couple questions...

    I needed to get the oil changed and I didn't have time so I took it to a Chevron carwash place. The guy there was pretty adamant that specs for the Toyota "recommended" only using Synthetic. The Synthetic oil change was of course twice as much as the normal oil. I did the normal oil change but thought I should check to see if this guys was just trying to upsell me or if it truly was recommended. The manual only recommended weight, not type of oil.

    In AZ should we still use 5w30 or should we move up to 10w30 because of the hot weather?

    Unless it specifies synthetics in the manual, regular dino oil is fine. They are trying to sell you into a "up service" that has better profit margins.

    5W30 will do you fine.

    I thought about getting one of these plier tools, but the way the filter is situated under the 2.7L it would be impossible to grab and turn it with any force. So I asked the oil gurus over at bitog and several of them pointed me in the direction of this little beauty.

    This thing works slicker than greased owl poop!! This past weekend I used it on my truck, the wife's car and our old Citation. You talk about positive grab and no slip! And you can use it from the top or from the side. The sides are spring loaded and grab immediately as you push it on the filter.

    For about ten bucks, this is one of the better tool buys I've ever made. And they make a bigger one for larger filters too.

    I put the oil filter on pretty tight (I wanna make sure I have a good seal) is there any harm in doing this? If it helps I hand tighten than I tighten it with the oil filter wrench.

    Holy crap! Stop at the hand tightening. These are so accessible (on top of the engine), you can get a good grip with your hand and tighten it pretty good. I've been changing my oil for 10 years and only snug it up. I'm sure my wife could loosen it with a bare hand.

    I suppose the damage would be in stripping the threads. The filters are aluminum and I'm sure the threads are a bit soft.

    Be sure to lightly coat the rubber gasket with oil before installing it.

    I was told my the mechanic at my local dealer, that they have been using 5w20, as per the engineers at toyota. Anyone else hear this?

    I've been running 5w20 synthetic and haven't had any problems.

    The 2.7 runs that, but the oil cap on your engine should say 5W-30

    No - just put it in till it seats good and then give it a quarter of a turn more. STOP you are done - it will not come off and it is not striped

    I noticed the 5w30. I understand that part. I was told 5w20 instead of 5w30 and I was wondering if anyone else can confirm this, or if there is any speculation about problems that would cause. Thoughts?

    is it better to remove the oil filter first or let the oil drain from the engine first? does it really matter either way?

    im just wondering because i saw a post in this thread where the guy drained the oil first and then removed the filter and there was virtually no spilt oil anywhere.

    You run a hose to it, and then to the oil catch pan, (or use a cup), and it catches all the oil that comes out of the filter when removed.

    Changing the oil filter oil.

    No seriously, it allows you to run a piece of clear tubing to the catch pan below the truck and catch any excess oil that runs out of the filter when you take it off, rather than making a mess.
