2015 DCLB Suspension questions/suggestions.

Greetings, I would like to first say thank you to anyone willing to help and answer a few questions/critique my ideas. And yes I have used the search button.

I have a 2015 DCLB sport, my goals are to fit a 285/70-17. I want the most comfortable (reasonably priced) suspension that I can realistically afford. I will be getting sliders and a camper shell in the near future and would like suspension to go along with it. I'm 90% highway, so comfort is key. I haul gear to the deer lease from time to time as well as the random camping trip. Again, I want to clear 285/70-17s with minimal issues (plastics are no big deal).

My plan
F: Bilstein 5100, OME 885
R: OME Dakar, Bilstein 5160
I'm assuming I will need UCAs as well.

Is there a better setup or anything I am overlooking?

I'm running the Old Man Emu kit with SPC LR-UCAs from @HeadStrong Off-Road. Originally did 887 (same spring rate as 885 but slightly taller) coils to achieve close to the 3" lift up front. I now run 886 coils though with the bumper/winch setup. Full Dakars in the rear. On highway driving you'll only notice your truck is firmer (better planted to the road IMO). If the roads are smooth you likely won't notice a difference. However, on rough roads the Full Dakar pack will bounce your rear end because it is meant for loaded vehicles. I have sliders, skids, bumpers, and a topper. And my last journey down a wash boarded road (last weekend) my rear bounced to the side twice (25-30mph, 60lb dog, 30lb kennel, firewood, recovery gear in the bed).

Most of my driving is highway to and from work. Don't get much time to play.


Bear in mind to fit 285 width tires you may need to do the Cab Mount Chop.

 

Arr you running the OME rear shocks?

 

Yep. OME Nitrosport shocks front and rear. They come in two varieties. I've got the "softer" ride version. Though it's more about the leaf springs in the rear. They are stiff.

 

How do you like the suspension? I've had a few rougher riding lifted vehicles and I would like to avoid that again

 

Wish I spent more the first time. Would like to get King, Fox, ADS. Something more capable.

 

Off road I'm assuming?

 

Yep. Moab. Stuff like that.

Tooling around town probably won't make a difference.

 

OP @Jared8907 what did you end up going with? Did you stick with the 5160 / Dakar combo? If so, how do you like it?

@Kyitty & @mwc273 great builds. I'm thinking about doing a similar OME suspension setup. Curious on your thoughts what you guys would do differently, keep etc. now that you've had the on the truck for couple of years. Did you end up going with the "medium" or "heavy" dakar packs?

I also have a DCLB with a Leer cap (~345 lbs) and sleeping setup in the back (~75 lbs) all of the time.

I'd like to run 285 70 17s but not have it ride like a lumber wagon as it's my daily too.

Back in the day there was only one Dakar pack. The medium and heavy option is new. I believe the original packs were similar to the heavy. I could be wrong.

An empty bed with heavy Dakars is a STIFF ride. Once I got my topper, kennel, etc... mellowed out. And with camping gear and shit back there the truck doesn't squat.

I did 887 coils up front originally for 3" height. After adding bumper, skids, winch, sliders... I switched to 886 coils. Much happier.

If anything I want more ground clearance. I'd like more lift. But i don't want spacers/blocks. Considering 35s some day but worried about all the cutting and front end wear. I run 33" 255s now.

I really thought my OME setup sucked this summer. Wanted to go Kings with Resies.... But I discovered that my shocks were just blown. Got them warrantied and it is way nicer! Totally different ride. LoL

The stiffer ride 90000 Nitrosports I have now suit me better than the 90021 soft Nitrosports I had originally.

All in all I'm happy now. 886 and Dakar is fairly bullet proof and budget friendly. No rebuilt required.
