The big issue I have with leasing (especially in MA) is that your excise tax every February is *always* high. You lease a new 2017 vehicle, so you are paying lets assume $500 for excise tax, the next year it drops to $400, then the third year you are around $250....lease is up and boom, you get another $500 excise tax with a new vehicle. If there is one thing in this world I vehemently disagree with, its excise tax.

I do get that if you play the cards right, you can walk away with a check when you leave after the lease is up, but you always have to be mindful of how many miles you are driving, the condition of the tires at trade in, and any cosmetic damage you may have incurred over the lease term.

I know can't wait for my truck to age a few yeRs so I don't have to take out a loan to pay reg and excise, this year was like 800 bucks, compared to the 140 on my old 09

You should see what people in RI pay for their "property tax" each year. At least like you said the MA excise tax goes way down after the 3rd year

    It's Taco time
i leased one of my first cars about 10 years ago and bought it out at the end, it worked for me because i was on a lower budget then and got what i wanted to drive with a lower payment . yes in the end i paid ALOT more then i could have but it worked and helped me build the credit to get the taco.

i also modded the shit outta that thing with no fees or anything, it didnt matter because ultimately i bought it out and did not return it to the dealer.

I know. SOME DAY I'll get there..
Warranty mod is alive and well. I'm not gonna do anything for at least 3 years. Slight aesthetic things here and there, but nothing performance other than a catback possibly. I keep almost stalling the damn thing because I can't hear the engine. It's too quiet at low RPM lol.
Meh, I think I'll use an isolated airbox, which they don't offer.

I'm out in 15 minutes :pccoffee:

Warranty lives on for another day
^^^ Exactly why I'm leasing my STI. I make much lower payments (relatively speaking) with $0 down, and once the lease is done, I owe $18,000 on it. I can buy it out, turn around and sell a 1 owner, low mileage, pristine condition STI for $31-32,000. So at the end of it, I lost $1,000, taxes, insurance, and reg costs. Residual value is insane on these cars.

That instance is good logic. You really don't lose the basic operating expenses as those are fixed costs to a degree of vehicle ownership. Plus you can use the FJ to keep miles off it

Your case is an exception, though, because I'm sure that as an employee you're not starting out at retail value. So you'd probably be in the same situation if you'd just signed a purchase agreement instead of a lease.

If you don't drive much and you are the type that always needs to be in a late model vehicle it works out. For the rest of us, a car payment isn't much different. Interest rates are so low on brand new vehicles that you can finance for 5 or even 6 years now without it costing crazy money, so how long do you realistically go without a car payment? Maybe a year or two? I drive 40k miles a year, so in 5 years I am buying a new one and the old one is worth not much more than scrap value. It's not much different than a lease only I can drive as much as I want.

Right, if you had a lease you'd be paying that extra 25 cents a mile over the lease agreement, which adds up damn fast.

As much as people complain about MA taxes, they really aren't bad overall in comparison to many states. We may have excise, but ever look at NY (or VT, to a certain extent) property tax rates?

As for a lease, I drive way too much to ever consider it. Plus, on a Tacoma as long as you didn't do something crazy like put nothing down on a six year loan it's probably worth substantially more than you owe on it.

That's what I meant. Getting anything in newer than 25 years is the headache. People do it all the time and I'm always curious how they manage to get plates / inspection on it.

Definitely. Bought my 13' new and Paid less than what the trade value currently is. Granted it also helps that I only do like 9-10k miles a year.

Well there's a couple of ways around the 25 year rule; you can bring it into the states IF you can bring it into compliance with emissions and crash standards (cost prohibitive, if not impossible depending on the car). Or if you can prove that it's close to a vehicle already sold here (I think the official term is 'substantially similar' or something), or if it fits into the long list of cars that the government maintains of rare or unusual cars (I think that category is called 'display and show')

Or you can just wait until it turns 25, lol

I have 115k on my 2011 and it's still somehow worth around $19k private party last I checked.
