Im looking at getting 255/85/16s in my 2.7L with 4:56. Anyone running this setup? How's your power and MPGs?

Manual or automatic transmission? With my 2.7, I'm running 285/75R16's w/ 4.88 gearing, auto trans. Although I have a smaller dia tire, they're load range E and quite heavy. With plate bumpers, sliders and gear, I'm pretty heavy. All that said, I'm happy with the combination and considering the 255's myself.
If you not lugging around the same weight, you'll probably be fine - more so if you have the manual transmission. Just my .02 cents. My MPG is under 20... It does get better mileage on the freeway, just keep it under 70... No tach... Econo trim level

I have the auto with ARB front bar, winch and dual battery. Other than that it's stock

I know there are other threads on the topic, but what did it cost you to regear to 4.88s? I've got 4.3s with the 2.7l (manual) and want to regear to put on 33s but not sure if the power gain will be worth thit investment.

Including installing an ARB rear locker, just under 2,000... That's removing and reinstalling the thirds myself

I ran the 255/85/16 KM2's on my V6 4.10 gears and to be honest I alsolutely loved them. I loved the narrow/tall tires for the extra clearance and when they found bottom they really pulled hard. I moved to Dallas and sold them with ~30k on them and went to a 265/75 KO then KO2. My next tire will be a 255/85 again, the only kicker was my speedo was around 5-6mph off.

So I got them installed today and LOVE them!!!! The power loss is noticeable but worth it so far, I haven't taken them off road yet though

    automatic transmission?

    what wheel setup with backspacking?

and last what front lift and any rubbing issues?

sorry for the interrogation but looking into the 255 setup and want to see what real world experiences and setups worked the best.

    thanks for the reply

Yes I have a double cab V6 with auto transmission. I ran the tires on stock 16" rims with a 2.5" Toytec spacer lift in the front and AAL in the rear. I had mild rubbing in the rear with a load or full suspension flex, but after a few 1000 miles a didn't notice it anymore. I had little to no rubbing in the front "only full lock and in a dip or bump". My next tire will probably be the dick Cepek extreme country in the 255/85 size.

I have 255/85s with the 3RZ Auto. I ran them for about 2 years with stock 4.30s. There was definitely a power loss due to the size and also the weight of the tires (most are load range E).

I recently upgraded to 4.56 gears and it put my speedometer back to stock. I did the math and the "ideal" ratio would be about 4.6.

If you wanted to have slightly more "power" than stock, then you should go for 4.88s.

I swapped to an elocker axle at the same time. I got the complete axle from a junkyard and sent the 3rd to ECGS for a full rebuild with new gears. They have prices posted on their website.
