It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
I know how it works. I'm really looking for videos that visually show it working and peoples specific experiences with it and how they perceived that it compared to the rear locker. Not much on youtube other than Toyota demos which are only good for a laugh.

    Just as I suspected...it's worthless.

I used it to see if it works. Not really sure what it does.

4WD and Locker is all you need. The rest is a gimmick far as I can tell.

    Just for informational purposes...

"When you activate the Multi-Terrain Select feature, the system will regulate wheel spin, brake pressure and throttle response to increase traction. Simply select the driving mode that matches the terrain around you and the system will provide unrivaled traction. Selectable terrain modes include — Mud and Sand, Loose Rock, Rock and Dirt, Mogul and Rock modes.

In loose terrain such as Mud and Sand Mode, the system will allow for more wheel slip to help you navigate obstacles and gain unprecedented traction. When faced with rocky, uneven terrain, the system will apply more brake pressure to minimize wheel slip and function like a limited-slip differential. Regardless of what terrain you are faced with, the Toyota Multi-Terrain Select system will deliver exceptional performance."

I think it's effective. It's like a newer version of ATRAC where you can define exactly what kind of surface you're on.

I'm coming from a JK Unlimited Rubicon, 3.5" lift and 35s. Lots of articulation on those and lockers front and rear.

With that background I was still impressed the first time I took the Tacoma through something that would test the suspension and need MTS. Even though I was only on a couple/three wheels at some points my forward progress never slowed. The ability to slow the spinning wheel to power the wheel with traction really works.

I've always been impressed when wheeling with Toyotas that had ATRAC and this system seems to be more of the same. I find such systems more useful than lockers most of the time.

It's just that when a locker is truly needed nothing else will suffice. But I also think many use their lockers more than necessary when negotiating obstacles.

As for crawl control, haven't used that yet but my hopes are high.

Favorite photo of my Jeep and my truck with my buddy and his Blazer attached.

I love mine! Its like ATRAC tuned to the terrain selected.
It works with the rear locker engaged and almost eliminates any need for a front locker.

if u have it in 4wd low with the rear locker on then when ur using the mts it's only the front that provides power to the wheel with most traction.

that makes perfect sense to me, maybe not in higher speeds but considering if u have a front locker on ur taco it's not really that reliable with IFS while it's flexing.

now if u put a front air locker in the front for mostly mud/sand use then yeah that's better but isn't it risking breaking stuff if u use the front locker when suspension is flexing in the front like on rock where the wheels will literally pull the ifs apart??

so then the mts is the next best thing for that situation.

and correct me if i'm wrong but if u have the arb front air locker then u can still use the mts when u are flexing ur suspension a lot but when in mud or sugar sand use the air locker?

i like mts and the idea behind it, seems smart to apply brakes to non traction wheel to cause the other to get traction.

So people can confirm it works with the rear locker on?

The worst case scenario for a locker is when wheel speed is high, one of the wheels comes off the ground or slips, and then suddenly regains traction again.

This is when the weakest link in the drivetrain gets damaged.

The advantage of MTS/ATRAC or any other brake type traction system is that the slipping wheel is slowed down preventing the previously described scenario.

Also, a locker is a 50:50 split across the axle. A brake type system can put 100% to one wheel in theory.

Like I said, I'm a fan of such systems. Jeep has one that I found effective, MTS imho is that much more so.

Yes, it will work for the front when rear locker is engaged.

I use MTS mostly for rock sections. I don't want to run the locker for a long period of time so I use MTS.

    It is highly effective

I'm going this weekend somewhere it rained for 3 days so I'm going to thoroughly test it out in the mud

Just curious why you don't want to run the locker for extended periods. Are there differences between it and say.. an air locker? (aside from actuation method) At least off road, my experience is that lockers can be run indefinitely with no detrimental effects. Are these Toyota lockers different?

The actuator can over heat if left on for a while. I also don't want the unnecessary stress on the half shafts if I don't need it

How can the actuator overheat? When the e locker is on, it does not mean the actuator is running. it runs for maybe a half second, max.
