Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
    Hello!

So, like many others with a 2nd gen Tacoma my 6spd manual is less than perfect. This is my second 6 spd, and it seems to drive different from day to day. Anyway I am snowballing an idea, so far I have not found it yet.

I have seen t56 swaps, and have though about various 5 speed swaps. Today i had a new idea, why not a swap from 3rd gen Taco?

The 6 speed in my 2015 is the RA60F. Toyota finally did something about it and the 3rd Gen Taco has a new 6spd, from my research that is the RC62F.

The gear spread looks better for daily driving and MPG, 1st gear is not as good in my opinion but it ia back to the standard toyota 5 speeds of old ratio, which is much better than a t56 IMO for a truck.

    Ratios for the RA60F 05-15 Tacoma 6spd
    1st 4.171:1
    2nd 2.190:1
    3rd 1.488:1
    4th 1.193:1
    5th 1:1
    6th 0.849

Ratios for the RC62F 16 plus Tacoma 6spd
    1st 3.982:1
    2nd 2.017:1
    3rd 1.321:1
    4th 1:1
    5th 0.848:1
    6th 0.713:1

I believe it would still be good for towing being that I am supercharged, it currently has no problems at max rated towing on flat ground it would hold 6th all day. 7 percent grade it will hold 60-65 in 4th no problem.

Not towing, I never take it out of 6th on the Highway, and it burns some fuel.

Add to the fact i would like to go deeper in the axles and run bigher tires in the future, an added overdrive would be ideal.

Both are 6spd, 4x4 Toyota transmissions. The RA60 was built by Aisin, i do not know about the RC62, both are GR family engines however I do not know if the 1gr, and 2gr tacoma motors share a engine to bellhousong bolt pattern. I imagine they do not, and I would also guess that the transmission to bellhousing pattern is different. The transfer case?? Could be the same, maybe even the 4wd shift motor thing.

Does anyone know anything about these 2 that could be of use?

Is anyone else possibly interested in this? Or am I just crazy.

This transmission is awful. The NV3500 in my '89 Chevy 4x4 has even ratio drops and shifts like a car. I don't know why these trucks shift like grain trucks...
I did the Redline MT-90 gear oil change and noticed no difference, I really wonder how different it would act with the URD clutch upgrade?

    Drive different, what you mean?
Awful? I've liked mine RA60F, no complaints. :burnrubber:

I have not been very happy with either of my URD clutches. I will be trying centerforce, or SPEC next go around. I have and like the U spec heavy flywheel from URD.

    Sweet.

I like mine too, its great gearing for towing. But it could be a whole lot better over all. Reverse gear ratio blows.

The 6spd in my 2013 was clunky as hell, and it would lock up in gear when towing. But the gears would alway go in without grinding. Low speed it had horrid aounding mesh noise. Sounded like a tractor in the drive through. Overall always worked though.

My 2015 was smooth for a few thousand miles, and started grinding in 5th after a few months. Now its a clunkbox, no noises but it occasionally will not go into first, sometimes hates reverse, grinds in 5th.

I too tried redline, no real change. Then toyota drained it and put regular toyota shit back in.

I mean it drives different from day to day. Some days it goes through gears as it should, other days it will not go into first. About 90 percent of the time now it grinds going in to fifth, of course sometimes it is worse than others.

And it has a shitty shudder in first, like clutch chatter. Its pretty consistent, except for the last 2 days not a hint of it.

Ok then, unknown issues for me. 125k on the clock. I have used Redline MT-85 and some RVS stuff too: http://www.rvs-tec.com/

The reverse gear ratio sucks, that's true.

I put just shy of 30k on my 2013, and have over 20 on my 15 now.

Which is ridiculous, my 85 Toyota 4x4 with w56 5spd that I have run hard for years has zero issues.

I remember reading something on this forum years ago, it's not so much the tranny to blame, but the fuel management in the ECU. The RPMs don't react the way we typically expect between shifts (to please EPA standards). I could try to find the thread, but it will take some digging...

My 85 is well over 270k.

I did 78k im my 2008, that was the 5 speed and I beat the piss out of it the whole time, that trans was tough as nails and shifted great.

That is a real thing, its got a rev hang. But that is also easy to diagnose as a culprit, which is not the cause of these issues.

That rev hang does annoy me, and could make shifting worse. Probably even helps to make it slower like it is.

My 6MT shifts well and consistently, but I'm not happy with the ratios, especially for highway driving. Also agree regarding too much rev hang.

IMO, 5th and 6th should be taller and RPMs should fall more quickly. Transmission swap could improve the former. Wonder if flywheel swap would improve the latter?

I have swapped the stocker for the 42lb heavy one. I believe it helped just a tiny bit with rev hang, only between shifts as it does not idle up as fast. But very little at best, and it is still very obvious.

The 1st gear issue on mine is probably the rev hang, whenever moving like at a light coasting up and then stop. The the truck does not idle, it raises its RPM to around 1300, about 3-5 seconds after fully stopping it will drop to idle. If I blip the throttle, it will drop to idle. Cruiaing at 65 if I stick it nuetral, it would drop to idle and pull itself back up to 1300ish as I mentioned irrelivant to speed.

    Stupid emmisions crap.

I would also say that my 2013 shifted well. The only issue is that it would bind up and have to be forced out of gear when towing long distances.

Some days my 2015 does shift well, minus 5th that grinds. It is the weirdest set of issues any transmission I have ever owned has.

Mine shifts as well as it's designed to, I suppose. The only time I have trouble getting it into gear is during spirited driving (shifting at redline) it will not go into 2nd no matter how hard I lean on the shifter. It's like the clutch disc weighs a ton and the tranny needs a moment to lose the rotational inertia.
Regular driving, no problem as long as you're not in a hurry
