My rusty shitbox huh? That's funny, I don't recall bashing your personal vehicle.

Have fun logging into TW every day to see what new issues you have to worry about though. :)

Like I said before, for piece of mind carry a spare.

AFAIK, there's no guarantee you get the new part identified with the hatch pattern if ordered online, might need to purchase from the dealer and inspect before taking possession.

If they all failed, you'd see a recall.

Great thread....my truck was mfg. in 11/15 and now has 17K just like the OP. So far it has performed great but I have had all the TSB's done regardless of a problem or not (great tech). I am thinking on letting him just change my CPS regardless. He said it is a "quick repair" and the CPS is not that expensive. Since it hasn't failed yet I can't get it done under warranty.

Just curious...for those who have experienced the failure, what month was your Tacoma produced?

Seems like they are preparing for widespread CPS failures for the summer season.

    "Widespread CPS failures"?

Enough of the fear mongering.... they ordered more in case another customer has a failure so there wouldn't be a delay in repair. It's a good practice especially since it could disable a vehicle and can be a quick fix with the part onhand.

Any car / truck with a CPS installed is susceptible to a single point of failure. Had one in my brother's Mazda and the dealership had it in stock so we were able to repair it quickly. The dealership didn't stock it due to widespread failures of that Mazda CPS.

Fear mongering? There's a reason Toyota redesigned the sensor. I'm sure there were more failures than the ones reported on the forum for Toyota to justify redesigning a sensor midway through the 2016 model year. Toyota did it to themselves. They created the fear by putting flawed sensors in the 2016 in the first place.

We are still in April and forum members reported 2 failures in one day. Grab a chair. It's going to be a long summer. I'm sure there are many more failures to come.

Does Toyota build the sensor or is it sourced out?

How do you know the sensor is resdesigned or just that a few batches of previous versions were not within Toyota required tolerances? Do you make the sensors or have any first hand knowledge of before and after the new part came out?

As far as most here can tell they probably changed a supplier with tighter tolerances, added another layer of testing, changed a part number and added a grid mark to differentiate new verses old stock.

Yes, you're fear mongering, creating drama with your statements by evidence of a few failures and lumping it as "all will fail prematurely" and all we need to do is sit back and see.

Like I said before, if all were considered likely to failure there would be a recall.

Have no fear and filter all this interwebs 1's & 0's through your grey matter. No perfect material goods exist anywhere.
It's like am 8 years old again hanging out in the school yard, except now I own a $30k truck- life's good!

All customers see when their truck is towed and it's due to a sensor, they are thinking it's a Toyota problem. No one cares about suppliers. Toyota is overall responsible. I'm sure Land Cruisers, 4Runners, and FJ's have their own suppliers, but they haven't haven't had issues of this magnitude early into the model years where they had to be towed.

Toyota probably went cheap and went lowest bidder on their suppliers for the 3rd Gen Tacoma too when they only allotted $2.5 million for multiple engine projects in North America.

I've got the superseded part with the cross hatch marks installed from the factory and also carry an identical spare. Picked it up for a just in case moment or if anyone with a 3rd gen needing one that I see stranded out in the middle of nowhere.

They would if a supplier had a bad run of a critical part. Are you inferring that can't happen?

Again, you're just stirring the pot more than necessary. For owners that have an early build and you're worried about being stranded, carry a spare. You run around with a spare tire, why not carry a spare CPS, a spare fanbelt, a spare battery, a spare alternator, onboard air, a spare drive shaft, brake calipers......

All can fail and leave you stranded.

Toyota is responsible for any failured CPS, they're repairing under warranty.

I have a feeling Toyota went lowest bidder on suppliers for the 3rd gen with their project management engine budget. It's Toyota's fault for not paying more for better.

Everyone usually goes with lowest bidder.... it's Business 101 to help keeps costs in check with budget. Doesn't meant lowest bidder is the worst producer of a product.

What gets me is that this is Toyota's "universal engine" in a way. The 2GR is present in so many models across the Toyota/Lexus line. They must have changed suppliers for these sensors to be going out.

Which honestly makes sense, the Atkinson cycle version is new for 2016/2017 in the Tacoma, Highlander and so on. It is most likely an entirely different part.

In my opinion it's Toyota rolling the dice with their reliability and reputation when they do. Either way Toyota profits while customers get a good or bad truck with issues.
