I'm looking to make a shift knob on my stick shift out of a ski pole grip. Without the threads I'm sure it will fit over it with plenty of space, but i don't want it to be permanent. what do you think the best way to attach it would be? I don't know if i could glue in a threaded insert or something... Ideas?

Maybe you could fill the hole with epoxy resin, let it dry then drill and tap it:notsure: That is if the hole in the handle is smaller than the shifter.

Get a tap in the right size for the stock threads on the shifter post....Tap the bottom of the pole grip out as deep as you want it to slide down the shift handle.

Just a thought. What about using a wooden dowel the size of the ski pole handle, glue in or drill in the right size tap hole, and gluing the ski pole handle onto the wooden dowel? that way you could easily remove the dowel if you didnt want it to be permanent.

thanks - I think I'll try some epoxy and tap it out. If i did the dowel method do you think drilling in wood threads they'd wear out? I'd probably glue it in regardless. I need to find a good looking old ski grip now...

I tried getting the grip off the actual ski pole, but it wasn't moving. I just hacksawed is as close to the grip as I could. Filled it with epoxy, but think it would have been easier with liquid nails or something because it just wanted to coat the entire inside of the grip. Something not so runny would have been better. drill tapped it with the right thread and screwed it on. It's not a whole lot taller than the old knob. I don't know how to get into each gear now tho because it doesn't have numbers....
