Tacomas have front cats that are basically a part of the exhaust manifold, these are monitored and would require the O2 sim to get around the CEL. There are also rear cats that are not monitored and can be removed without setting a CEL, but affects the sound quite a bit. Since the 4.0 has a rasp to it when freed up from enough cats and/or muffler, it can take a resonator + muffler if you remove too much, or if you go catless headers.
