Had my timing belt and all belts done about a month and a half ago. Everything seemed good...just drove hone from work and notice the battery light came on and hard to turn the steering wheel. Get home..pop the hood..and see this. Looks like the bottom pulley is not sitting at the right angle

20170424_155836.jpggoing to call the mechanic asap..any ideas?

Looks like the crank pulley is barely hanging on. Don't drive it or even start the engine til it's fixed

I only drove about a mile like this. Does this seem like faulty mechanic work since I'm guessing this was part of the water pumping/timing belt install?

Yes, looks like the crank pulley bolt wasn't torqued correctly or even at all. Take a closer look and see.

Are the bolts on the harmonic balancer all seated flush?

Shit...just reached my hand down there and I can move the bolt with my fingers...do you think this destroyed my motor?

I think your motor should be fine. Things to look for is damage to the crank pulley and portion of the crank shaft that the pulley rides on. Also, the crank bolt.

Thanks for the quick replies. This better be on the mechanic 100%. I could hear some clanking when I got out to look in my driveway.

They were supposed to be a respected Toyota mechanic and do warranty their work. However I am definitely livid. This was the first time in 13 years I've taken it in to a mechanic at all. Just didn't want to take on the timing belt job myself.

OP- they'd better fix it or TW nation will come down on them. o_O

It's always good to have knowledge about issues like this before dealing with the mechanics. They'll know that you know.

Also if I were you I'd do a Yelp search on this business as well just to have in the back of your mind.

Give these Bozo's every opportunity to fix this and be courteous and it should come out all right.

Your motor should be ok, I would imagine the bolts to the Harmonic Balancer are trash

Hopefully they didnt overtorque it. Might have just over looked tightening the balancer bolts...

Years ago I had the clutch on my 1987 SR5 replaced. Afterwards I took it for a test drive and noticed some rumbling. Drove home and found that the U-joint attaching the drive shaft to the 3rd member had four (count 'em, f-o-u-r) loose bolts. Finger-tight only. I tightened them up and the rumble went away. Drove to the place that did the clutch replacement, told them what happened, read them the riot act... place went out of business a year later. Go figger.

Just got it back...they put a new crankshaft pulley on it and used locktite on the bolt this time. Luckily nothing else was hurt.
