I took my 2001 Tacoma in to get an oil change and the service lady said my truck was part of a recall for underside corrosion prevention. I know about the recall (of sorts) of the pre 2001 models and the frame repair/replace for corrosion, however this was new to me.

Currently my truck's underside is getting sprayed to protect against corrosion (Toyota even paid for a 24hr rental).

    Nope, same recall.

95.5-00: If the truck passes it passes. If it doesn't, toyota buys back the truck.
01-04: If the truck passes, it gets new undercoating. If it fails, it gets a new frame.

It is part of the extension, but afaik it's only for states that see a lot of snow (which this year was pretty much everywhere lol) where rust is very common.

Granted, more of the snow/salt states are affected but if the frame fails, it won't matter where the truck is.
My frame was replaced and I'm in Iowa. Not one of the listed states but replaced anyway, just because it failed.

Maybe they just sent letters out to owners that are in the north east. I know there "updated" recall had something to do specifically with the NE.

Obviously if someone goes in with a rusted frame, they're not going to be like "Oh sorry, your vehicle isn't registered in any state that we say is affected. Have a nice day."

I received a letter on this from Toyota several months ago.

    I have an '04 Tacoma 2.4l

The letter was not about a recall but a notice that an extended warranty was being issued to cover this undercarriage rust issue.

    Correct!!!
    It is not a recall.
They are calling it "an extended warranty."
Good for us as it extends our frame warranty out 15 years from the date of when the truck was 1st put into service.

Last time I was under my truck the frame looked OK to me. I'm very protective of my Taco though, and power wash it anytime I come off the freeway during the winter months. Oregon is using magnesium chloride on the Interstates now. They claim it has a "rust inhibitor" in it, but that's a lot of BS.
