@amirak, it's not outside the realm of possibility that you could fit 285s without major rubbing issues. Maybe see if the tire place has a return policy to where you can test them for a day or two and then downsize if say you don't like the brand or style of tire....etc.

So how do you run sizes, other than going and buy 2 pairs and put them on. Once on road you can't return them. Hard to do tire shopping without being able to test them first.

Most places won't allow you to run them and return them. would bigger tires void warranty?

Another issue is gearing and if you're doing this for looks you will be making a sacrifice with performance. Life is about choices but a Tacoma performs like a dead dog already so just imagine how it feel like you're towing a 10000 lb trailer behind you with those big tires.

I thought I saw someone say Discount Tire allows a return on tires. I could be wrong but you might call them.

So true! Quite a few guys that have gone to 285s hate the way the truck feels and drives with them because it really lugs the motor and transmission down on these trucks. This V6 does not have a lot of Low End Torque so having to turn much bigger heavier tires is going to be noticeable to your truck performance. Something you definitely will want to consider as well. Also Fuel economy will take a good hit.

A wider tire will also look bigger, and be preferable in most situations. A 285/70/16 is the same diameter as a 265/75/16. Well (0.07" taller). But will look a lot better due to it being wider, and should fit without issues. I agree with others 285/75/16 is asking for trouble if you use the full suspension travel. But, 285/70/16 will limit your tire choices.

I use my 285s off road with my pro no problems. Why don't you ask smitty what kind of vehicle he's driving

Small hit on the fuel. I get 16 avg. And it does lug around a little bit more. But no problems if you gas it

This video will give you all the info you need for your exact question. Will 285/75R16's fit with TRD Pro wheels? Yes, absolutely. Will you have to perform some MINOR modifications, yes, probably. But all you need is a heat gun... watch and enjoy...

    Good stuff here.

Honestly, anything smaller than 285 looks stock and too tiny over the giant front end of the new Tacoma's.

It's not any more hearsay than your own claims. An actual Pro Owner compared and measured the two trims. Others have made the same observations comparing the TRD trims with each other and the PRO.

Your credibility is already in question here as you've provided the OP with advice that 285s fit without modification when in fact there is modification required for the combo as shown in the video above, that you yourself praised.

The 285s are perfect! After 5,000 miles I've experienced a few very minimal rubs in situations with full lock and a big bump with decent speed. Doesn't bother me, doesn't have any impact on my truck. If it does bother you than you can use a heat gun for 5 minutes and not ever experience the irrelevant occasional rub.

But at the end of the day you can run 285s and love it with no regret. Or you can go too small and always wonder.

This is life or death hear smitty

So now you change your story and admit they rub. Life or death no. But the OP asked a question and deserves to hear a truthful answer...no?

You can buy or make tools to do it. Also need to factor in a lot of other variables like offset & rim width. But basically, make tool that can measure hub face to inside and outside tire placement, then pull suspension (springs shocks), cycle suspension while rotating hub with tool in place (and playing with lock to lock), looking for contact points. Need to do this both sides as I can assure you they are NOT even. Then once you have that measurement, you can start playing with wheel & tire sizes that will fit. For me this usually involves complicated spreadsheets. I've done it to a few vehicles when going overboard on tire sizes, it's worth doing if you are getting close.

Home made tools like this. You can also but them.

Here is a spreadsheet I built to calculate all the different permutations (for a different vehicle).
