    I agree that in times like this, we should cut back. However this is not something that we should cut back on, such as national security. God forbid if something were to happen again and we were attacked. And it could have been prevented by our coast guard, but couldn't because of lack of funds. That's it for BO, he will not get re-elected.

    There is many other things we can cut out, like maybe the salaries of those in congress, etc.

    Something will happen- It might not be to the caliber of events int he past- but the next time something like Haiti or Katrina happens and the Coast Guard says "Sorry...We just can't" people will be all up at arms.

    5 helicopters, several fixed wing aircraft, 5 Maritime Safety Security Teams, and about 800 personnel are all going to be separated and we are expected to continue on. The excesses I see from other services- It's reall frustration.

    I think it's normal attrition as members retire or relad. Recruiting for the Coast Guard for all intensive purposes done for the year.

    Wow, never knew there were only 41k people in the Coast Guard.

    I'm a Hospital Corpsman, a HS in the CG, and we have 23k people in my rate alone.

    It's too bad everyone is asked to do more with less now. We train pier side vs. going underway. They call it 'virtual training' and it saves fuel. Whatever... The problem is the CG can't train pier side and this really affects the readiness which in turn affects our National Security.

    • Save 15 lives
    • Assist 117 people in distress
    • Conduct 90 search and rescue cases
    • Protect $2.8 million in property
    • Enforce 129 security zones
    • Interdict and rescue 15 illegal migrants at sea
    • Board 4 high interest vessels
    • Board 192 vessels of law enforcement interest
    • Board 122 large vessels for port safety checks
    • Seize 71 pounds of marijuana and 662 pounds of cocaine with a street value of $21.1 million
    • Conduct 317 vessel safety checks and teach 63 boating safety courses
    • Conduct 19 commercial fishing vessel safety exams
    • Respond to 11 oil and hazardous chemical spills
    • Process 280 mariner licenses and documents
    • Service 140 aids to navigation
    • Monitor the transit of 2,557 commercial ships through U.S. ports
    • Investigate 20 vessel casualties involving collisions, allisions and groundings
