Is that the W59F or the R150 transmission?

If it's the R150, once you pull the bearing retainer on the front side you need to take a brass rod and a hammer and (carefully!) tap around the entire transmission case on that side (the left, in your pictures) to separate the case from the intermediate plate.

Don't try to pry it off, or you can damage the case and then it won't seal up when you put it back together.

It's the piece at the front of the transmission that bolts onto the front of the case and slides off over the input shaft once you undo the bolts.

Give me a few and I'll try to find you a disassembly diagram.

click on the box above my name on the left side of the thread and start a "conversation"... the issue now is how do I actuall send you a 230mb file with upload limits set by the email provider. Might have to set up a third party go beween like dropbox or?

ekk... you might not have had to pull the trans out... I hope my description using words is going to be clear enough... On the intermediate housing, the cast plate about 1 inch thick, you will see 3 screw plugs. These plugs keep a dentent plug and a spring in place. these detents give the shift rods that notchy feel and help hold the slider in gear. these you can get to from the outside of the gearbox while installed. In between the 3 shift rails there are floating detent plugs also, these prevent you from engaging 2 gears at once. as the shift rail goes from neutral to a gear the notch in that rail is moved forcing the plug to lock the next rail inplace... this might be what you are experiencing.

on a side note... I had a early 928 get tapped in the rear at a stop light while the trans was in neutral... the guys at the assembly plant in Germany forgot to put the interlock detent rod in between the shift rails and both 2nd and 4th gears slide forward and essentially locked the trans. When I disassembled the trans and informed the factory what was wrong they didnt believe me. They sent a factory rep out to view the issue. From a manufacturers perspective how do you check EVERY 1984 928 manual trans for this oversight? What are the odds of this happening? I'll bet there were some late nights at upper managment worrying about this.

I agree, this totally sounds like the detents are at fault. They're those three screw plugs right above your red arrow in your second picture, OP.

Well the intermediate plate isn't supposed to come off; the larger part of the case is. Think of the intermediate plate as the base that everything else attaches to; it's what you start with.

Unscrew the plugs and use a magnetic pickup tool to pull the springs and locking balls out, and then see if you can get it out of 4th. This is step 13 in the guide I posted above, if you want a visual.
