Also drums are superior in terms of static grip (using the parking brake on a hill). Rear discs have those tiny little parkimg brake shoes under the rotor and they fall apart.

Why? Because calling Geico can save you 15% or more on car insurance. Always a good answer.

While I think it was purely a cost reason (and dumb) that Toyota stayed with the drums, I have yet to feel cheated in performance or confidence.

Would rather have disc from an ease of maintenance idea, but not enough to think any less of my truck.

I'm more bummed about no CarPlay than rear discs

Love how 2nd gen owners always troll the 3rd gen spot. Must be tired of driving the shit box 2nd gens.. Mouths must be salivating at the thought of being able to own a 3rd gen... Time to troll the 2nd gens... Anyhow. Its drums brakes... who cares. Guess Tractor trailers with Drums must have been doing it wrong for the past 50 years, idiots right?!?! Most stopping power is in the front brakes as well.

My 2nd gen's drums liked to collect mud, gravel and dust offroad. The parking brake jammed a few times. Always fun beating the backing plates on your new truck with a rock.

Pretty much this. I never meant to give the impression that I thought the drums were anything but a cost cutting measure, but I'm really, really not that fussed about it because the front brakes are so good. I would gladly take the rear drums to keep those big beefy fixed caliper 4pots in front than have discs all around with cheaper slider calipers.

    Thank you!

So anyways, here is a basic, preliminary plan I worked up to actually improve the Taco's braking performance- budget under 1000, keeping some semblance of brake balance:

First off, add some μ (friction coefficient) to the rear drums. Many performance brake places out there will apply their pad material to shoes as a custom order. Pick something street-able because you'll never get a race compound up to temp.
I'd have to look at data sheets rather than make a suggestion off hand, but something sort of like Carbotech 1521, since its μ is acceptable at ambient temp.

Now, we could throw that same compound on the front axle and call it a day, or we could also see about getting larger rotors up front.

A larger rotor is going to give you added brake torque with the same caliper, think about it kinda like using a progressively larger cheater bar on a bolt. This would have to be carefully measured out and you might find that you're no longer able to run 16" wheels, but basically you buy a larger rotor and use a simple machined caliper mount to get the caliper spaced out for the new diameter. You could probably run 4runner rotors with little fuss.

That should get you a bump in braking performance without inducing any wacky side effects like poor line pressure / brake balance / etc.

Why do you think you need Disc brakes? Tacoma does not tow a lot nor does it race around grand prix tracks...

Ooooohhhhh, sounds like you are the 3rd gen enforcer and want to ban 2nd gen people from participating on the 3rd gen forms?

Maybe contact the mods with your plan.
