I can recount many times I did, and some I cannot remember. *cringe*

 

My neighbor (same one who helped me install the new head unit and backup camera in my truck last September) offered me an Image Dynamics 12-inch subwoofer for almost $100 less than retail, plus a Rockford Fosgate amp for like $180. He bought two subs and two amps, and installed the other amp and sub in his new BMW 5-series GT, which has the factory Harman Kardon system and already sounded pretty damn good. He gave me a demonstration of the system in his BMW. I've been tossing around the idea a subwoofer and external amp for a while, and I almost pulled the trigger...

Sadly I can't fit it in my truck without losing 2 inches of leg room...






Image Dynamics does make a shallow 12-inch sub that would probably fit in my Tacoma without sacrificing any space, but I would have to pay full price, plus the $180 for the Rockford Fosgate amp and whatever it costs to get a custom enclosure made.

My neighbor Ryan who installed my new head unit and backup camera last September did find MTX Thunderforms for the 2nd gen Tacoma regular cab, but I lsot the link and unable to find it now. The MTX website is not responding for some reason.

One guy I know who is an Alpine dealer told me I shouldn't go any bigger than an 8-inch sub, but my neighbor told me that guy was full of you-know-what. Honestly, after hearing the 12-inch in Ryan's BMW, I'd prefer a 12-inch but wouldn't mind a 10-inch. I definitely do not want an 8-inch.

Am I allowed to drink beer in my truck, in my driveway, with the keys in the ignition, so I can listen to the radio and maybe turn it on so I can use the heat?

This actually came up a little over a week ago when my cousin came down to visit. I bought 2 six-packs of beer, and we wanted to sit out in the bed of the truck and drink. It was a little cold out, so I suggested sitting in the truck where it was warmer, and maybe even listening to the radio. My cousin talked me out of it because of the open container law.

I told my cousin that drinking in a vehicle in public was one thing and I would respect state law, but I didn't really give a shit what the local cops had to say about me drinking alcohol in my truck on private property...

Basically, my parents pay the mortgage on the house and thus own it, and the title to the Tacoma is in my name, so I legally own the Tacoma...

Do I make a valid point here, or is it against the law to drink alcohol in a vehicle parked on private property?

 

I had a 10 inch Polk sub in a Reg cab sealed sub box in my reg cab tacoma. It hits good and more than you need. You be surprised how hard it hits with the sub right behind your back.

The sub box design of your neighbors is probably a bigger box than a Reg cab sub box and will sound different.

You could build your own sub box, it's a simple design.

 

The sub and amp in the BMW are in a sub box. The sub and amp I wanted to buy do not have a box. My neighbor had to build his sub box.

 

I got that part. I said you could build your own subwoofer box, it's a simple design.

I'm just saying a good 10 inch sub in a little box behind your seat will hit just fine.

Your neighbor can help you build a box.

Just this past St. Patrick's Day (2017), a bouncer at the bar where I work basically stopped a local cop from giving me ticket because I was doing my job...

When vehicles are parked in "NO PARKING" zones for the purpose of loading and/or unloading, both cops and parking enforcement tend to leave them alone. I park in the alley outside the bar where I work to load and unload all the time, and this is a well-marked "NO PARKING" zone. Pretty much everyone in town knows my truck, and knows where I work. On a nice day (or night), the only problem I ever encoutner is drunks who seem to think a silver Toyota Tacoma is their personal leaning post. Three days after a huge blizzard (as was the case on March 17, 2017) when snow is piled up and the alley is effectively made narrower, there is almost no room for two average-sized vehicles to fit at the same time. As such, I pulled my Tacoma so far up onto the snowbank created by inferior snowplowing that I was pretty much half on the sidewalk, and there still wasn't enough room for even a Smart Car. On top of that, my truck was very oddly positioned. The left front wheel was up on the sidewalk, the left rear wheel was barely on the curb, and the truck was leaning to the right. Anyone who attempted to pass between my truck and the building next door would have probably taken the sideview mirror off.

This incident went down while I was down in the venue putting stuff away and I did not not know about it until I came back up to move the truck and my friend (the aforementioned bouncer) told me that he'd just stopped a cop from ticketing my truck. I was already stressed out from having to avoid drunk jaywalking morons on the way back to the bar, and I went off on my "President Trump doesn't touch my truck unless I say so" rant.

Apparently, a cop in a marked patrol car drove down the alley on routine patrol, which is a regular thing on busy nights (with the amount of drunken douchebaggery occurring in Doylestown on a regular basis, everyone including myself appreciates the strong police presence). The only difference was that on every other night there had been no snow on the ground and my Tacoma was far enough over that even full-size box trucks can pass. Even though my truck was technically parked illegally, cops and parking enforcement left it alone because they knew I worked there. I'd put the Tacoma's hazards on, which is the international signal that one of the following has occurred:

A) The vehicle with it's hazards on is disabled for whatever reason and unable to move.

B) The owner of the vehicle is doing something important, like delivering vital supplies to the bar where he or she works (On St. Pat's, no less), and will be back shortly to move the vehicle.

If I were the cop, I would have assessed the scene, realized that the vehicle was not going to be there all night, and gone another way (There are two other entrances to the property). Instead, he drove down the alley anyway, realized he couldn't fit his SUV past my truck, and decided he was going to write a ticket instead of giving the owner of the vehicle a chance to move the vehicle. He shouldn't have even driven down the alley in the first place. The cop got out of his vehicle and walked over to my truck. He may have told the bouncers he was going to ticket my truck..

Luckily, before he could do anything the bouncer stopped him and explained that the silver Tacoma belonged to an employee of the bar who had just gotten back from a supply run. The cop got in his vehicle, backed out of the alley, and went the other way.

 

I've got another friend who's a carpenter who can build me a box. What brand of sub do you recommend?

 

That's a nice setup..what's the mounting depth required?

I have 2 12" MTX's in mine. I only give up 2-3 inches tops of seat room, at 5 foot 10 it sits perfect there anyways. So you may need to be a bit creative but I bet it works.

 

I would go to car toys and listen to different subwoofers. Pick what you like.

With the 10 inch sub in my reg cab, I don't remember giving up any leg room.

Just keep in mind that the subwoofer is going to sound different in a small flat box compared to a bigger box.

There's not much depth behind the reg cab seats and it might be wiser to put in really good smaller subwoofer in a correct box rather than a big sub in the wrong box.

At first, we want loud hard crazy bass. After awhile, I want to hear the music as it should be with a just little kick.

 

Got lucky that time.

 

No final word from the dealership?

 

Just looks like surface rust at the welds.

 

my 2015 has some orange showing around the welds. I keep a couple cans of fluid film in the garage and crawl under every once in a while and spray anything thats showing. its a PITA as ive never had to do this with any other vehicle. If the fluid film doesnt do it, it wasnt meant to be. Its more effort than ive ever put into another vehicle. (frame wise)

I like it, but I don't love it. It's kinda glitchy at times (though this may be my iPod and not the HU).

It does not pick up my favorite radio station (93.3 WMMR) as well as the Pioneer it replaced, though I believe this is a coincidence because MMR comes in shitty in other cars too...

 

Another problem with the stereo and the iPod is that it literally mixes my songs together. Say I'm listening to Billy Joel and then I decide I want to listen to Dire Straits when the Billy Joel song is done (or vice versa). If I don't select the next song at precisely the right moment, it "imports" Billy Joel to Dire Straits (albeit temporarily). I'll have to exit and then reselect Dire Straits.

 

It'll last forever if you keep the salt blasted off it in the winter and recoat it with your choice of rustproofing elixir every couple of years. Its no big deal. And other vehicles have rusty underbodies too. Lots of frames rust out. Especially when they're boxed.

 

So the verdict on whether 2010 frames were improved is still out.
