Rear Differential Completely Destroyed at 25,000 kilometers.

Unfortunately this also confirms the Limiteds aren't immune to the problems reported by mostly OR owners. Sheesh.

I really wish Toyota would fix this shit.

...and now the third degree interegation starts. Call from Toyota Canada asking if I have aftermarket mods to truck, etc. Love being accused (even if indirectly) of absuing the truck I paid for with hard earned money. Buyer's remorse is an understatement. It's so bad I might go buy a Ridgeline.

 

Probably because they were told to shut up. There is a lot of liability there.

 

Any suggestions on how I handle this? Keep putting diffs in and living with the noise until I'm out of warranty and out of luck? I've lost all faith in the truck's ability. I use it like a minivan.

I have a friend that was offered a buy back for 3 attempts at fixing the same problem. It was the howling diff. Did this happen to you OP?

 

If that happened to me, the offer I mean, I would take it in a SECOND! My truck was absolutely quiet for the first 25000 kilometers and then it was catastrophic failure. It was definitely the dreaded howl at 50ish mph when I got it back but honestly I was embarrassed to even bring it in as they ultimately made me feel like it was my fault it had happened and I thought they would just shrug it off and say "road noise" or "tire noise" like others have said they were told when complaining about the howl. It got to the point that I couldn't have a conversation with passengers in the back seat so I reluctantly made an appointment. 2 hours later they came and said it needs a new differential. The case was full of fillings and "chunks the size of a thumb nail" as per the tech's explanation. Of course then I had to spend another 4 hours arguing with Toyota Canada to give me a loaner only to be told at multiple levels that I didn't have extended warranty and that because I got a loaner last time it would be unfair to the people that pay for extended warranty that I would get something for free that they paid for. Keep in mind that this truck now has 29000 or so kilometers so well within the original warranty. My math on the kilometers is slightly off as I didn't record it this morning and they won't let me drive truck. Basically it had between 25000 and 26000 on it when it blew up the first time and it's around 29000 now. I can update when I get a printout and compare to the last printout in February. I've also enclosed some more pics from THIS time of the filings in the case / oil.

I did get a loaner but as I understand it was completely and independently provided by the dealership. So that the dealer stepped up I'm actually quite pleased as I cannot be without a vehicle as I'm in sales and need to be mobile.

 

Holy crap, go trade that stupid thing for something else. If you can't trust it, eat a few $$ and get something else, it's not worth the headache IMO.

I'm not sure what you mean? Did they not give the new generation Tacoma a good review?

But in all seriousness, I feel for the problem trucks, and the people strapped to the cost of the truck. I'm sorry that hardworking people (hopefully) have to deal with such a hardship. I've never called bullshit on anyone's problems. I'm just super optimistic because I MYSELF have had the luck to not have these problems yet, and my experience with my Tacoma is radically different than yours. As I've mentioned in another thread, the moment I realize I have to go out again to the grocery store I'm like "fuck yeah" instant good mood.

Further more, I would like to add that I am a real owner of multiple tacomas and I could burn either of them down and rebuild it almost as fast. So. There's that.

May I suggest a 4runner. Not everyone is getting a bad truck, mine wasnt exactly good, to put it lightly. I never had any issues with the old power train on my FJ, but need more space, so I moved into a 4runner. Might not be a bad thing if you use it like a minivan.
