228,000 vehicles would be pretty much all of them, right?

Maybe change title to "3rd gen differential leak recall coming" as that is more informative and accurate for folks?

1% of those 228K units is their ROM on those affected but my suspicion is they're going to "estimate" on the low end just to keep the news out of the spotlight.... I know we've seen a handful of leaking rear diffs just here on the forum and there's a very small fraction of Turd Gen drivers posting on Tacoma World compared to the 228K units sold. So yeah I'm thinking 1% is low but hey at least they're doing something about it and acknowledging the issue.

It could be added but it is in fact a stop sale until certain conditions are met.

Confirming OP did NOT lie as implied by some who responded.

Yeah, I didn't mean 228K were leaking - just that 228K, or essentially every owner, was going to get a recall letter to come in for the inspection.

As far as I'm concerned in general recalls and TSBs are just fine - they demonstrate customer service even if the owner would prefer things were "right" from the start and not inconvenienced. It is only really annoying if you were one of the first to experience the problem before the recall or TSB and had to go through lots of dealer hassles.

Absolutely, the original post title is accurate. But this doesn't just affect vehicles about to be sold. It is a recall affecting the 228K vehicles already sold and so it impacts every 3rd gen owner on the forum - not just those purchasing soon or recently. That's all I meant about changing the title being a good idea.

This isn't an issue unless your differential housing is leaking.

Actually if you read the notice there is still action to be performed even if there are no signs of leaking - all the fasteners are suppose to be re-tightened. Maybe that is minor or maybe they believe some of the leaks are developing because of improperly torqued fasteners.

Wow. The first real "Recall" on the 3rd Gen Taco.

I love how it says they won't bother notifying owners until Mid June!!!

Obviously they aren't very concerned about people's diffs seizing and running dry if they're waiting 2 more months to tell anyone who's already driving one....

There have been several guys posting pics of the rears seeping, maybe this will also lead to them working on a fix for the howling.

Honestly that is probably just about as fast as they can notify 228K people by mail. It isn't like there is a giant big red "recall" button in a bunker somewhere they push.

Hell, the Takata airbags that quite literally shoot metal into people and kill them had notification times even longer than that. Nothing to complain about here I think.
