my rear end was already replaced by a Toyota Master Tech. I assume the fasteners are already torqued correctly.

I'm betting... it's as simple as telling an intern to do it. They pull up all the registered warranty names/addresses in their database (which they have), export to excel, run to Kinkos, and have Kinkos print off 228k envelopes and stuff them with the same letter.

In a week's time all those letters are in the mail.

Yeah, I'll inspect mine tonight and retorque tonight JIC. I see no signs of seepage. Nothing to be alarmed about. If you've had 3rd member/ carriers serviced/ replaced, I'd recommend you guys inspect and get proper torque values on those fasteners. Half the dealer monkeys only zip shit down with their 3/8" impact guns or ratchets. I've personally witnessed it. Torque wrenches require too much time to use for warranty work was the mentality. Not saying this is a fact for all dealerships, but the 3 dealers I wrenched at were this way.

Why does the title say STOP SALE?

there isn't anything in there telling dealers to stop selling them

    That's what I read.

"Toyota will begin to notify owners in mid-June 2017."

Either the rear diff is leaking or it is not. So they will visually inspect it and if they see traces of leakage, seepage or an active drip, then they will take action as they deem necessary.

Ah, I see how you are reading it. That could be that they don't start sending to owners for a month and a half.

The Stop Sale is probably nothing more than inspecting it first.

Did you read the letter? Look specifically in the section that begins with the large, bold word, "NOTE". It does specifically say they should hold (i.e. not sell) any current new vehicles until they've been inspected and that if one is determined to have a problem it should be held until it is repaired.

There is also a provision stating that a customer with an effected vehicle should be given a loaner vehicle.

So was that what the guy at the Audi dealership was trying to get them to do?

Thanks for posting this up so it could be read, the first post is very hard to read.

Good call. Do you have the torque spec amount for them handy?

I can also search... but if it's at the tip of your fingers, I'll take it! Thanks

I think your 3rd Gen Bromance is what's failing. Effectively this letter is telling Toyota Dealers to stop selling 3rd Gen Tacomas until they can inspect/repair them all. The inspection requires loosening and retightening bolts on the axle/differential. This might mean that dealer stops for a day, or two perhaps in order to inspect their lot. But they still have to stop long enough to inspect them.

My local dealer usually has 12 - 20 Tacomas on their lot.

It's not a long term cease and desist, granted. But it will delay sales for a short time.

Visual & if no leaks, RE torque if I read it correctly. If leak seal replace, if damage center carrier R&R. Also involves loaner vehicles.

Leads me to think production specification & not design issue.

And for those biting on the "only 1%" it impacts all 3rd gen with a coming recall AND the brand in general.

And it clearly states STOP selling until inspection / RE torque is accomplished.

I believe it was 18 for the ones with the e-locker and something nearly double that for the non-locker version. Let me find the Factory service manual page for you. I remember there was a slight discrepancy in it.

My guess is "REAR DIFF INSPECTION & TORQUE CHECK" will be the next step on your Service Checklist right after "INSPECT DRIVERS SIDE FLOOR MAT"
