AAA jump start fried my computer

Price is not your concern. A proper repair is. Simple as that.

If you are confident in your 25 yr mechanic and his diagnostic skills, you could also ask that he do the work, but use Toyota parts (if/where parts are needed) I'm sure his hourly is lower than a dealership, and he may well find the issues in less time.

 

OK; and to think up 'til now I had thought i'd heard every excuse there was--I mean it's not like getting them right is critical or anything...

My mechanic does replace computer, just not Toyota. I think he told me the Toyota stuff is somewhat proprietory and he either doesn't have the codes or software to reprogram a used one. However, he did meet with the AAA adjuster and they reviewed what his diagnostic machine reported and they both concurred the computer was gone.
However, it was AAA who seems to be directing me to have the truck towed to another nearby mechanic who has a former Toyota tech working there. Once there, this guy can reprogram it. But here's the catch:
1. This former Toyota tech is actively looking for a new job because he wants more money. So if he does the work, and he leaves, what do I do if problems arise?
2. The shop AAA is directing me to is the same shop that fried the computer.
3. The Toyota dealer I bought the truck from new, is 1 mile away.

 

I don't want to do this with you--suffice to say I am 72 years old and have likely been driving and fixing vehicles longer than you have been alive--and I damned well know the difference between positive and negative, as should anyone entrusted with doing field service.

Do you know which way the electrons flow? Positive to negative or vice versa?

 

So it the contractors shop. Go to dealer. If that's what you feel comfortable with. Me I'd go to dealer. Any issues with 3a lawyer up.or check out the shop they want you to go to online.and if it looks good go for it.get a written warranty.

Any decent jump pac [and that is all that should really be used anymore] should have a reversed polarity feature that won't allow juice to flow unless they are hooked up correctly.

If you are actually in business of doing jumps and assists it's almost a necessity because it cuts down on ''whoopsies'' and false claims that someone fried their vehicle as you CAN'T hook it up wrong and have it pass electricity.

 

There's the secret. They want shop who employed the offending tech to eat the cost directly.

If you speak to the manager of the shop, and he instills confidence that the vehicle will be repaired properly, it's fine to proceed with them. But, YOU have to know enough about what's up to know if he's instilling true knowledgeable confidence, or if it's just BS talking.

The 'toyota tech' leaving or staying isn't your issue. All you want is a properly repaired truck.

I see the mileage, not the year. I assume it's older? Keep in mind that many of the dealers techs may not have been directly trained on your age truck. And they may, or may not, be good diagnosticians. So don't auto assume that Toyota will get it right instantly either. They might. Or not.

 

Sure do. But ask me after I've been in the truck after a 13hr shift. And I might make a split second mistake. And grab the wrong terminal. I never said the tech didn't screw up.that's not the issue. He

Yes I do. No one said the tech didn't screw the pooch.I know he did, so do you. But what I don't know is why your gunning for me? I didn't do it.

 

It's harder than it looks.

 

The kid definitely reversed polarity. No doubt, I saw it. He told me to sit in the truck, with no key in the ignition and wait for him to give me the go ahead. The blue arc is what drew my attention. Right after that I saw him switch the cables quickly.

 

I wonder how AAA manages to hire kids with no experience nor comon sense. My wife had a flat on her Lexus and I wasn't available so she called AAA and that kid while getting and returning the tools from the Lexus back door panel somehow managed to get grease, black markes from the tire all over the back area (tan interior color) my wife said to him: you are lucky my husband is not here, because if he saw what you did, he would've wiped the whole car with your clothes.
She said he was tiny and the tire was bigger than him and he was struggling throughout the whole process.
I know mistake happens but sometimes there is no excuse for that
In your case mixing the terminals is not acceptable.

I guess I'll be the one to ask........why did you call 3a for something as simple as jumping your vehicle in your own driveway?

I mean, it's not like you were stranded on the side of the road in bfe, right?
