They called this afternoon and gave me a quote of $11,197.50. I was wowed. I was expecting about $10,500 and was expecting to have to argue for that. As it turned out, the dealership made a mistake on the equipment listing they sent to Toyota. They indicated I have electric door locks and windows, but I don't. I told the rep that, so she suggested we check the rest of the list. The dealership missed that I have the SR5 package and a CD/Cassette deck (it's nice when being honest pays off). So Toyota is refiguring the offer with those items included. They'll get back to me tomorrow. Not only that, they said I can take off my brand new 33" BFGs and put the old tires back on, and remove my class 3 hitch and trailer brake control without affecting the buyout figure (they already added on for off-road tires and tow package). So, all told, I should recoup pretty darn close to $12,000, once I sell my tires and hitch, for my 2000 Taco with 144K miles on it. I'm liking this! Check the classified section for the tires and hitch

They said I have up to 3 weeks to turn it in. Now I'm seriously in truck buying mode!

the only buyout that you might imagine his 1st gen has would be rust, at least that would make sense to me

Second question first: Well, the buyout is for frame rust (see gen 1 stickys). I took it mainly because there was no option. For 97-00 model years, they no longer offer the frame replacement. Secondly, for gosh sakes, man look at what they are offering!!! Initially, I wanted the frame replacement, because I absolutely love my truck and wince at the thought of it being dismantled, but after thinking about it, I just couldn't turn down that buyout offer. It is more than 1 1/2 times what it is worth (they offer 1.5 times BB, no matter the condition).

First question: Much as I hate to say it, I need a full-size truck, because I'm going to retire soon and start a small business. I got permission from the boss (wifey) to buy a Dodge Ram 2500, 5.9 Cummins Diesel, 6sp manual, Quad Cab, long bed. They get about the same fuel mileage as my Tacoma with the 2.7, but they'll haul and tow a whole lot more.

I'm telling you guys, there is no down-side to this! My face is starting to hurt from so much smiling!:D I wish Toyota had a 3/4 ton diesel.

Damn, I'm jealous. I wonder how many months seperate your 2000 from my 2001, and my only choice was frame replacement.

Buyback is, and always was, your only option. Frame replacement was never an option under the earlier (1995.5 - 2000) frame rust program.

Well, I don't want to seem judgmental, but I would feel dishonest taking things off the vehicle that were used to establish the book value for the vehicle. It has nothing to do with whether they are right or wrong. It has to do with what I agreed to. Now, as far as aftermarket accessories that have nothing to do with book value and would make no difference in the buyback value, that's another thing. Here's what I did:

Toyota called me on Wednesday and offered $11,197.50, but when the lady started verifying the options on my truck, it quickly became apparent the dealership made some errors. She read off, "electric door locks and electric windows", which I don't have. I stopped her and told her I don't have them and figured that would make a difference. She suggested we go over the entire list and see if anything else was wrong. We discovered the dealer missed the fact that I have the SR5 package and also that I have a CD/Cassette player.

Then I asked about the tires, since I discovered the rust as I was getting new tires installed (KBB gives an upgrade for oversize/offroad tires). She told me I could remove them and put the old tires, which are also oversize/offroad 31s, back on (glad I kept them). She also told me I can remove the hitch and trailer brake control (although today a different lady told me I could take the control, but the hitch is part of the KBB tow-package upgrade).

The nice lady said they would have to refigure the amount and I would get a return call. So, today I get a followup telephone call. The new offer is $11,895.00. So, for once, being honest paid off. I got an extra $700 in the deal, and I still get to remove and sell the tires and trailer brake control.

I place a high value on personal integrity. Normally it costs me in monetary terms, but every once in a while...:)

^^ There is no questioning integrity when the owner asked and was told that removing items is not an issue.

Your value likely only went up because they figured in the SR5 package, not because of your honesty.

Yeah, I guess I shouldn't have mentioned it. Honesty is a pretty personal thing. You just can't talk about it without somebody feeling judged and offended.

But you might ask yourself, with whom would you rather do business?

    So long. I'm outahere!

They gave me 18,500 for my 2000. I still shed a tear when I had to leave it at the graveyard.

Friend of mine didn't have an air filter in her 2000 (NOTHING IN THE INTAKE), the engine was gunked to hell, skipped over the high mileage services, just an oil change, and the truck was getting ready to grenade when the frame rusted out and she got 12k for it. Then she turned around and it put it as a down payment for a full sized chevy:rolleyes: I don't get it.

I have a near-mint condition restored 1996 Dodge 2500, 4x4, 5.9 Cummins, extended cab, auto trans, long bed. The Cummins is bullet proof but the Dodge "container" will never hold a candle to a toy truck (even a gas model).

In most of the world, Toyota sells diesels in many models. In some countries, you could even specify a D4D diesel or an old fashioned turbo diesel. I would take *any* Toyota diesel before I would take any US products if I had the option.
