If you put your chisel on the seam then move it towards you 1/8 in that's where I tapped on it.

 

Swimmer is right. I've heard of ppl doing this job without removing the axle from the hub. I did remove it but I'm sure you could do it without.

 

I tried that method. Eventually got pissed off and just used a 3ft prybar and popped it out.

 

Same here. That's why at this point I'm trying to remove that nut. First I have to get the damn cover off, which seems impossible. I guess I'll try tomorrow with fresh eyes.

Save yourself the hassle and leave it attached at the hub, did mine this way

 

Definitely tried that. Been trying to use the large prybar to get it to pop out, but it won't budge.

 

Try to push in to relieve the tension on the snap ring and turn 1/4 turn then try again. Repeat if necessary. I ran into the same problem and then magically hit the right position and it popped out with minimal force

 

I'll give it another go in the morning and try that. I need the "magically" part to happen!

 

Try placing a fulcrum point for the screw driver so that when the screw driver is inserted into the gap on the cap, that the screw driver is slightly leaning towards the outside. Having the right fulcrum point for prying something off can make all the difference in the world.

 

It helped me to put some .250in flat stock between my diff and prybar for extra leverage.

 

Well, I've even tried the cable method which many swear by as working every time and got nowhere.

 

I tried that to. Got nowhere with a 4# hammer. Eventually it just fell out with a very light pry. After about an hour of straining and cussing.

Mine finally came out using the sledge hammer and cable method. Took about five or six good swings and then I just popped right out. Currently trying to drive in the new bearing square. Not easy!

 

Yep, works every time with a sledge and a good bump!

Didn't Work for me. I am putting my stuff back together. After having to put this off for several weeks because of no time and then not being able to get it done is infuriating.

 

Don't know if your using one but if not a bearing race/seal driver makes it easy to square it up. You can rent one for free at autozone.

 

I used the install tool from ECG and it ended up working perfectly. I just wasn't driving it with confidence at first, then started smacking it and it went in nice and square.

Dammit! I was hoping you got this knocked out today too. Getting the axle out was frustrating. A 7' cable and my big sledge got it out. Nothing else seemed to get it to budge. I tried turning it a 16th turn and using the method that @Mongoose used in the other tread and it wasn't having it. I finally just went to the sledge method and went agro on it. I bungeed up the axle so it kinda just hung there after it popped out. Wish I was closer to help you out, man.
