    Say's the Navy guy.

Reading over this I'll say. Pick what fits you. Now, with that. I came in back in 97 and wanted to be an ET (Electronics Technician) and I did so because it was something I didn't know and I wanted to learn about it. I went ET. I spent 6 months on a cutter and put my name on the list. I wen too school and went to Kodiak, AK for 3 years (try doing that as a fresh 21 year old). After 3 years I decided I didn't like it and opted to change ratings. I put my request in and it was approved, 6 months later I was in TT school (Telephone Technician school and the best rate out there period). My point is, if the army will guarantee you something it may be too good to be true as you may find out you may not like it. I can't speak for the Army but for the CG at the time it was pretty easy for me to change rates. Now, it's a little more difficult. Regardless of whats offered to you, you need to find your niche and what your good at.

On the contrary...I hears there are some changes coming.

for the rescue swimmer, yes, he's right. one is a collateral duty (sucks BTW cause you miss out on swim calls) and the other is a specific rating (AST) which you have to go to school for, and it's not an easy school to get through.

Damn good? Not only physically fit but have the mental fortitude to survive the brutality of the course. There is no shading the odd's you can meet the physical requirements however, there is the mental aspect to it, you're going to have to want it in order to make it through school.

As Nirvana says, there are waits for school, here is the current list for A school's as well as the physical requirements for AST http://www.uscg.mil/psc/epm/docs/A-SchoolList.pdf

Also, when he says small, truer words have never been spoken. Our service is around 38k Active duty and the more time you spend in our service the more people you run in to. Nirvana's recruiter is a good friend of mine that I've known for over 12 years. I work with a LT right now that was a cadet on one of my ships and he used to bum cigarettes from me. I work closely with former detailers, subject matter experts and people I've met over the years. It's quite the experience working within an organization that is as small as it is.

The running joke is "singer tech" and by singer we mean the sewing machine. The job isn't all jumping out of hero's and saving during babies out of the surf. There's maintenance and upkeep of systems. As AST'ss you guys will also maintain the parachutes for the dewatering pumps and... sew our chevrons on our ODU's cause you're such nice guys. The dissatisfaction may come from the expectation that you're all awesome helo jumping, life saving hero's but in reality there's more to the job than just that.

I would not count on it being a viable option. The CG moves people around, we have cutters with limited connectivity to shore (no phone for personal use underway so forget about that).

    What he said.

As for the M world, I can't attest. i've got a few friends on the M side, they are smart in their own right but it suits them. Like I said before. You have to find what suits you best. I though tET was good for me but I found out that I understand a lot more about circuits, telephony and networks so TT/IT suited me better. I could have gone Machinery Technician, Damage Controlman or Electricians Mate but I felt I needed to learn something else so I chose ET.

    Much respect for the CG.

My cousin is a rescue diver. He spent 5 years in Alaska (I think up at Kodiak island), now he is in Hawaii. He wants to go back to AK. He has told me some awesome stories.

    Thank you for your service!

    Checking in.

Formerly Enlisted(BM then ME), went OCS in 2013, putting on LT in December. Currently the XO of the Northeast Regional Fisheries Training Center on Cape Cod.

I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up...

Really though - I am available to answer any questions, review resumes, narratives for OCS applications, I'll give mock boards, etc.

I like helping people out in any way I can, personally and professionally. PM me and I will give you my contact info.

Will wrap up my 30yr CG career in 6mos. Aviation has always been my interest and being in CG aviation has been rewarding! From the MH65 to HU25 and the HC144 it's all been good.

Nothing like fixing what you fly. Especially when the fix gets you and your crew home!

CG Aviation, Aviation at its best.
