Torque specs lug nuts

What should I torque my lugg nuts to?

 

83 lb ft.

 

83 ft/lbs.

 

Factory service manual states 83.

On further analysis, I think its actually TW being finicky. While I was unable to fix my post I learned that the torque spec is actually 996 in/lbs. I can't seem to find a tool though.

 

Yeah I just saw someone else post about it. That's too much math right there.

According to my manual, 85 ft lb is the correct number (and, yes, I know 113 Nm does not convert to 85 ft*lb, nor does it convert to 11.5 kgf*m ).

 

113nm if you have a metric wrench.

Actually torque is force * distance -- lb·ft, or lbf·ft to be more specific. ft·lb is a unit of work (energy).

Most likely the "correct" lug nut torque is 113 Nm as the engineers were working with metric values--which is 83.3445 lb·ft, closer to 83 than 85--however manuals often publish more convenient values like the 85 lb·ft (+1.99% vs the actual conversion) as an added 2% really doesn't matter.

Snap-On's TechWrench and TechAngle digital torque wrenches are rated at ±2% from 20% to 100% of full scale; most "clickers" are in the ±3-5% range, Snap-On's clickers are rated ±4% which is the ANSI standard. There is very little if anything on a consumer vehicle that needs to be torqued to better than ±5%...

 

Basic rule of thumb for those who have rulers and thumbs.....approximately 95 ft lbs for aluminum rims.

 

I usually torque mine at 100 ft-lbs.

 

Ross, is this your thinking, or what Toyota recommends?
