hey guys I found a manual locking front diff from a 98 Tacoma. The price is right but it is 3.73 gears. I've been reading and I read something that said you can't put larger size gears in this housing? I going to need to change the gears to 4.10 to make it work for my truck. Can anyone help clarify I'm supposed to go pick it up tomorrow. Thank you for the advice

You can put 4:10's if the clamshell is the same as mine - can you link what you read that said you couldn't? There's guys with 5.29's in the front on here @Blackdawg

Edit: didn't see the manual locking part - my bad maybe that could be different. I have manual locking hubs with an ADD diff though, so presumably you could get an ADD diff and just cap off the vacuum hoses?? @DJB1

Manual locking? Like..an auto locker in it? or just a manual hub diff?

Either way, its still just a 7.5'' Clamshell and you can put any gears you want in there.

I've been told that using a add diff is an option and u can lock the actuator and it will be like a manual style diff. Thank you for the reply

i will be using manual locking hubs. So I'd be using the manual locking (non-add) style clam. Oh ok thank you.

Do you guys have anything you think I should look at or test when I buy the diff.

For example if I were going to buy a used car and I wanted to test the front bearings ball joints and bushings I could jack up the car and pull on the wheels to for play.

Is there anything I should do with the diff? I have experience with differentials but not Toyota front IFS clamshells

Probably goes without saying, but check to see if you can break loose the fill and drain plugs. The one I bought from a junk yard had a drain plug that was stripped and gorilla gripped into the diff. Had to pay a shop to weld a nut on there and the first time they tried it, the nut snapped off the thing was on there so tight (or their welds were that bad o_O) Either way check. 10 mm allen wrench
