Another rear TSB question

Sorry to add yet ANOTHER question about the rear leaf spring TSB but......

I HAVE A 2009 TACOMA V6 4X4 TRD......
Do I need anything done to my suspension besides the spring TSB....like add different shocks

I keep reading the TSB threads and have some confusion about the Billsten 5100 shocks....do I need them to level my truck or not???

You do not need bilstein 5100 shocks. When you get the TSB done. Your back end will be about 1 inch higher after it settles. Your truck is going to have the Crab Walk, IE front sits lower then the rear. People normally get bilstein 5100 to level out the front of the truck. If you need any more help just pm me.

 

Why do you need rear TSB? Do you experience bottoming out?

The new rear spring will lift your truck 1" to 1.5". With the new height, you might experience topping out of the rear shocks. If you can't take this, install a shock extender or use rear 5100. The rear 5100 will eliminate this as it is designed for up to 2" lift in the back.

To level the front, you can purchase leveling front spacer or replace the shocks with 5100. The 5100 is an upgrade to the TRD shocks and is adjustable (0, 0.85, 1.75, 2.5" heights).

 

I am bottoming out with 2 motorcycles in the bed (about 800lbs) on the highway when I hit a bump or dip.

SO what I am understanding is that my TRD offroad suspension is useless....and my front AND rear shocks will need to be replaced or I should add spacers.

SO how exactly is this "TSB" fixing my truck if it doesn't include the correct shocks? And after I get the TSB done...I will have to do even more work and pay for it myself

 

the trd package has nothing to do with the leaf springs.. only the shocks. you don't have to do any more work. we just prefer to lift the front so it sits even with the back. it's a matter of personal pref.

The tsb will increase the payload of your truck but while doing this it will raise the rear of your truck 1 inch. You don't have to do anything after this, but you can install new shocks (5100's) that will raise the front of your truck if you dont like the look of only the rear being raised.

 

I see...and I too would want a level truck...just like I bought it
I would not have bought the truck with a jacked up rear end...and I didn't. So why should I have to level out the truck after they do the TSB...shouldn't Toyota be responsible for that????

So to level the truck out I should put the 5100's on the front...
AND if the rear shocks will now be "topping out"...wouldn't that be another warranty/ TSB issue?

No, it won't increase the payload, it will just keep the rear from sagging down to the bump stops when loaded. They put a sticker on the door that says something like, "This vehicle has been modified and the payload has been reduced [blank] pounds" with a zero written in the blank. I'd get the exact wording, but I'm too lazy to walk out there.

Mine was raised only about 7/8" immediately after the work was done; I think it will settle down to a total of 1/2" or less. For those reporting a 1-1.5" raise, I wonder if the techs are bouncing the truck before the alignment, as the TSB calls for? Or, where are folks measuring this increase?

 

IMO, if your load is bouncing on the bump stops under normal driving your are overweight as this is unsafe (therefore your safe payload is less than advertised). The TSB allows you to use the entire rated payload safely. It raises the rear of a truck an inch, its not a big deal, but if you want to make a stink about it to toyota go ahead, they may give you a 1inch spacer, but i doubt it.

The lift I got was about equivalent to the thickness of an extra leaf spring

OP is sweating over nothing. Get the TSB done and enjoy your new payload capacity.

Mine was hitting the bumper stops with less than 200lbs in it. After i initially took it to the dealer thay said there wasn't a problem. THAT'S WHEN I THREW A FIT!!!!! After a little argument and me showing them that the area where the bumper stops hit the frame was the only clean spot on it they agreed. I have no regrets and think it really rides like a truck now. I like the slightly more rigid ride. Feels more like a truck..

Same as what is advertised for stock, just won't bottom out like stock springs. The exact number varies between engine size, cab size, etc.

 

Just so you know. If you get the rear spring TSB done it will raise the rear end 1-1 1/2 inches. It will settle out at about 1 inch. It will greatly improve ride and carrying ability and lastly, if you didn't know it was there you would notice the front end being lower.
Were talking about an inch here. Might be important to your wife or girlfriend but it's not something you will absolutely notice. Add the front shocks only if your planning on getting a larger tire/wheel combination. Otherwise spend the money on your bikes or babes.
