"Smarter" autos already exist, just not for Tacoma money or Tacoma purpose. Porsche PDKs on a track are quite remarkable even if you just let them do their thing.

It sounds like you might be ready for a manual though. Step up, you won't regret it.

No good, the older I get the more stupider my manual gets.

Wouldn't all that be how to refine an AT? Seems like after this one they should just try to make an AT that %70 or more of its loyal fans base would enjoy.

I mean heck, if jeep is alredy making a solid 8spd in the grand cherokee that'll probably end up in the....

Already saw the fire in the ram thread today. Won't go there. But I'm sure you get my point.

In theory the sensor to measure roll and pitch angles are already there on third gen trd off road tacomas

That's funny because my 2nd gen downshifts to 3rd going downhill to slow it down. Works great. Also downshift going up hill workout extra throttle. Seems to already be smart.

    Buddies ford does it also.

So a yaw rate sensor? Which is already in use and applied to all of toyotas vehicles.

Unfortunately, we're just lazier here in America. The rest of the world still has no issues using them.

Proven technology and simple. Using the human brain, it adapts to coming hills, downgrades, curves, adverse road conditions, etc.

    I'll keep my manual.

Proven too, they achieve greater mpgs vs. An other form of transmissions, granted correct gearing.

My wife's Charger would stop shifting up when I was weaving thru traffics...gas..brake..gas...brake. Do that twice and it would hold the lower gear for 2 minutes or until I manually shifted up.
Basically it recognized aggressive driving and would stop going back to overdrive.

It's not just us being lazy. Almost all car manufactures including BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, ect... said by 2020 no manuals will be left. Mainly to get better gas mileage and to keep competitive in racing. Only Austin Martin said they would keep manuals in production.

Do you need to know, or care?
Volvo does this in their semi's. Records road data and GPS coordinates to maximize efficiency. It anticipates a hill coming up and will downshift accordingly.

... and the aftermarket folks will make a bundle selling manual trans upgrade kits. The thing about a manual trans is that if you're in the wrong gear, it's nobody's fault but your own. Besides, ever try to push start a car/truck with a dead battery and an automatic ?? Easy with a manual

I'm in the need for a new battery so if the truck sits for 2 days I pop it rolling out of my driveway.

Incidentally , between the ECU, injectors, and fuel pump you aren't push starting anything with a bad battery anymore.
My battery has enough current to move the starter, but not enough voltage when turning the motor to run the ECU.
You get an interesting light show. Rolling start works fine though.

Yea true. I'm switching an auto into my drag/street car because the manual is to inconsistent. Or I mean I'm inconsistent. Lol.

I see it this way. A manual transmission gives the driver all the control but it can be sloppy and inefficient if the driver does not pay attention.
A automatic transmission can make or break the feeling of performance being faster and smoother.

The Tacoma needs a trans redesign very badly. They forgot Taco drivers are discriminating clients. These vehicles are not just run of the mill cars. They serve a utility and operate in off road environments.

Other have said; 'my other truck, non taco performed great". Well that's because that truck had the HP and the Taco does not.

Lowering the shift points helps gas mileage but gut the trucks ability to perform.

My idea to make the truck smarter can make a real difference with the underpowered engine. It will artificially make your truck more powerful. You would find yourself going up hill without having to floor it and feel the transmission do what it should have done in the first place.

A tilt sensor could know you just loaded the bed or dropped a trailer on the bumper. Just one more idea.

So a height sensor? Which is used by toyota and most lexus vehicles to account for load, airbag suspension, and afs headlights.

the taco has plenty of hp, its the fact that the motor makes peak torque around 4600 rpm so you dont have the best low end torque in the world

A CVT could be a big improvement but the public is not ready for it in a truck. I love the CVT on my Polaris RZR and in my wife's Maxima. The design is simpler, way more efficient and would solve all the power problems. There are still too many issues with reliability either real or false. Public perception will prevent a CTV in trucks as trucks have to be heavy duty, hard working, pull trailers etc. But maybe one day they will do it. You know they could.

Some time ago I started this thread and it got a lot of action about the transmission.

I like the idea of CVT but it's just not suited for a truck. I love the constant pull no matter if your 1500 rpm or redline. Having a CVT in a car/crossover is great, not a huge amount of weight to carry around. I just don't think manufacturers have found a good enough belt to withstand the weight a truck may need to carry, but maybe I'm wrong. I prefer the CVT in an off road vehicle like the RZR because the vehicle is just so light and nimble. And I understand your theory in your OP but isn't that already a thing? I still truly think there is something wrong with the new 6spd, I've driven it twice and hated it both times. I also drive regularly a 2013 Pilot with Honda's old 3.5 and 6spd auto, that transmission shifts at the right time and pulls when I need it and getting on the highway it continues to upshift pretty quick until I'm running 1400rpm at 70 mph. Even the "old" 6spd in the 2016 F-150 doesn't do the same shit the new 6spd does in the 3rd gen. I love the new 10spd auto though, just as good pulling as a CVT but has a great metal to metal transmission feel compared to the CVT when you are upshifting.
