As to the truck being gutless when in OD/cruising, that's the Atkinson cycle. It was touted in all of the marketing - do some research before you buy your next vehicle. Once you're cruising, it switches to Atkinson. Atkinson makes very little power, just enough to maintain speed. If you hit an incline or a headwind or you're going fast enough that the Atkinson cycle can't overcome the wind resistance, it's going to frequently jump out of Atkinson and downshift to maintain speed. It's also going to appear to hesitate because the valve timing and injector sequence has to change in addition to the downshift. It's a fuel saving measure.

The TSB is because Toyota underestimated how many people wouldn't be able to grasp this concept. There's no super obscure "code bug" or "valve body leak" here.

I'll take that jab. My previous experience in Toyotas blinded me. However, that still doesn't give toyota an excuse for shipping these trucks with a garbage transmission

For the most part you are correct. However, rev 1 addressed another issue.... shift flare. They do this by purging the air bubble that gets drawn into the valve body while the truck sits and the fluid cools and contracts. If the air bubble is not purged, when third gear disengages, the 4th gear apply clutch is delayed and the engine revs up (like depressing a clutch pedal). That is the flare.

Please either cite something from Toyota directly to that effect or disclaim your post as speculation.

Enough with the test drive bull. Somethings just can't be felt on a test drive. Your feel of the shifting pattern, power, vibrations change significantly after doing a 8 hour road trip compared to a 30 minute test drive.

I certainly haven't met a dealer that would let me take a interstate trip for a week as a "test drive".

Glad you're willing to accept something that drives like 50-year old technology!

I've had this thing do the shift loop between 2nd and 3rd in S3. But you're right, I'll find myself climbing a grade at 4500 RPM in 3rd gear for 10 minutes. At least it's not shifting.

As someone stated earlier, it'd be a lot nicer to drive if S-Mode functioned as a gear-selector rather than just a gear-limiter. As it stands now, there's really no way to eliminate the hunting with the limiter. And yes, I use ECT in the mountains... helps a little bit but doesn't eliminate hunting.

Lastly, I don't mind how this truck drives in town or on rolling highways. Sure, it's a little low on torque, but it doesn't bother me in these settings.

Sure. I can do that. The valve body bubble issue was stated by one of Toyota's transmission engineers (from Japan) when they visited my local Toyota dealership. This was relayed to me by the senior tech that handled my truck. If that citation is not good enough, then I can't help you.

So why not report it to the mods and let them do their job? They are the forum police and you are not. You are simply harassing a member as far as I can tell. @jberry813

enough with this test drive bull??its up to the prospective buyer to put the vehicle through its throws before slapping down $40k, its nobody elses fault if you didn't test out all aspects of any vehicle before buying it. every vehicle I ever test drove or just drove I could tell how the trans operates within 10 minutes of driving if you know what your looking for.
