This is exactly correct. Of course it's "footprint" based too so there's more than one way to skin the cat.

Pretty much the way I look at it, multiple modes to operate in, each has advantages and disadvantages. Learn when to best use them and the truck starts to shine. Stick with one mode for everything and you're probably going to complain.

This isn't like other A/Ts you might have driven in the past. If you want a truck that drives like before you might have to look elsewhere, 2nd gen or another brand.

Yep, and thats why the truck is still a V6, and the Tundra is still a V8.
Small improvements here and there and they breeze right through, unlike other manufacturers that have full electric cars that 5 people want.

I don't believe in this theory.

I feel as if my truck sucked abundant ass AFTER the "learning period"

    Just my two cents.

Also, I used to get 24-26 mpg without even trying for the first few months of ownership and have slowly worked my way into the 17mpg avg.

You can literally feel it if you understand what the Atkinson cycle is doing. You might as well be asking me to prove what gear the truck is in with a technical article. It's illogical and unnecessary because you can feel the truck change gears.

The actual Atkinson engine design looks nothing like a modern internal combustion engine and wouldn't work for an automobile at all. The term Atkinson used in conjunction with an automobile engine has always referred to dynamic valve timing.

Yes mine always performs better for 3k miles or so AFTER a software flash/update. Then goes back to suck.

Dsmdylan, Mateo is right about what you have done. I looked back at your dispute with bradwhitenikki. Your main beef with him is that he did not cite a trustworthy source when he made his claims. This is exactly what you just did with your Atkinson cycle claim. I am not picking on you, but Just keep that in mind when you are judging someone else.

As far as the Atkinson cycle is concerned, Toyota marketing stretched the term to capitalize on potential transfer propaganda. Our trucks are not Atkinson cycle. Rather they employ dual constantly variable camshaft positioning (vvti). What Toyota is calling Atkinson's cycle is really our trucks retarding the intake camshaft to release back some of the air charge to the intake manifold and hence reduce the combustible products in a single stroke of the cylinder. However, and a nice feature, due to a long stroke, the reciprocating assembly has more time to convert thermal energy into kinetic energy. Also, because the cylinder pushes back some of the air charge, other cylinders have a reduction of pumping losses (from needing to draw vacuum), due to the other cylinder pushing back an air charge. These techniques have been employed by Honda for about 10 years. They work very well.

I am glad Toyota uses these techniques. This is NOT why our trucks feel slow. This strategy only occurs at light throttle. Give a slight increase in throttle and you are back into standard Otto cycle. It is the transmission gearing and shifting strategy that makes our trucks feel slow. And yes, CAFE standards play a major role in this. Quite frankly, I like this truck.

I just wish they would fix the mechanical problems. I also think 5th gear should have been about .85:1. This would have played more nicely on the highway. I feel confident Toyota will keep improving the new engine management strategies.

DSM,please try to be nice to others. They may be trying to help you and the community. Cheers.
