I was at dealership yesterday for my 5k, I had them do the rotation and everything and also asked them to check the howling sound I was hearing. First thing he says is my OR is not on the recall, I kindly told him I already checked the list and knew it wasn't on the recall but I still have a noise. At the end of the day when I picked it up the Mechanic asked to ride along so he can hear the noise I was referring to, Ok no problem. But before he jumps in the truck the service advisor comes out and says don't bother, he got off the phone with the District and it looks like Toyota is about to do a recall on ALL Tacoma's for the FRONT differential. Now he may have been BS'ing me to just satisfy the customer but he had read my vehicle history and knows I've already had a ton of issues so not sure why'd he do that...but in any event I am playing Taco-damus and predicting (with information) that the Front diff recall will be soon.....

I'm sure you're right, but in this day and age I should have assumed someone would say something and preemptively addressed it. Thanks

That is what my front diff looked like before I cleaned it all off. Took it to dealer and they said it's just oil from a sloppy jiffy lube oil change. I have no idea if it's a leak or oil change splash. But looks like a leak to me. I cleaned it good and will see if it seeps or weeps

Isn't the front diff the same as in the Gen2's? Does not compute ....

Although I did change my front diff fluid at 15K and it was black.. rear was clearish... I have no howling diffs. MT V6 so have the 8.75 rear w/out a locker.
Told my service adviser about the front diff fluid being black, he's got a 2015 sport MT just like mine. All he said was "I better check mine"..

I'm not sure but if it's weeping or leaking the same as the rear diff's its a problem, check peppiness picture of the 2016 and it's leak. I didn't get full details but he said we should hear something soon.

I don't know what it is. The dealer said they thought it was oil splash. I tried to smell the fluid but it didn't really smell like anything it didn't smell like oil or diff fluid. So I don't know exactly what it was but I cleaned it and we'll see if it comes back again if it comes back again then it's a leak

Similar situation for me though not as informative as what you heard. I was supposed to get in for my 3rd attempt to get them to acknowledge and address my issues and this time was offered to have the master tech ride along with me. Couple of days pass of me following up to get it scheduled and then I was contacted and informed they would be instead setting me up to meet with a Toyota field rep and discuss my issues / drive along. Perhaps has nothing to do with a future recall but I did find it odd their tune changed from "let us ride along and see what you're talking about" to "we don't know what to do - we'll connect you w/ Toyota..."

Skeptical. Has anyone heard of a single complaint about the front diff. or needed to get it replaced/repaired? More dealer BS IMO.

How long has it been since cleaned now? Couple of weeks?

If its a leak it should already be revealing itself. If it was spillage, it will still be dry.
